Set almost entirely inside Hitler's Berlin bunker the film chronicles the dying days of the Third Reich as the Allied armies close in on Berlin. Guinness' Hitler is an enclosed depressive who sinks slowly into madness depression and ultimately suicide as his 1000-Year Reich collapses around him. <br/><br/>A co-production between Italy and the UK made by Ennio De Concini better known for his many exploitation films of the 1970s. <br/><br/>Blue titled wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. Laid in typed letter signed attesting to the vintage and provenance of the script from David Ehrenstein author of "The Scorsese Picture: The Art and Life of Martin Scorsese" describing his acquisition of the script original studio Paramount's abandonment of the film and Universal Pictures reviving the project five years later at which time screenwriter Paul Schrader and director Martin Scorcese altered the script significantly.<br/><br/>Based on the controversial novel by Nikos Kazantazkis Schrader's script departs from the Gospels' depiction of Jesus Christ and explores human temptations incurring outrage at the time from some Christian groups. Sughrue scouring America's sleazy underbelly in search of a girl gone missing from Haight-Ashbury a decade earlier.<br/><br/>After Walter Hill's critical and commercial success with "Warriors" 1979 and the critical success of "The Long Riders" 1980 he focused his energies on adapting "The Last Good Kiss" in which he was hoping to cast Nick Nolte. Unfortunately the project was shelved and Hill went on to make "Southern Comfort" a critical success but commercial failure. In truth Guinness can't play a note nor can his visitors-he's a criminal mastermind holding court over a gang of thieves including the likes of punkish Peter Sellers homicidal Herbert Lom and punchdrunk Danny Green. Robert Coburn who photographed one of the images in this collection was one of the most influential portrait photographers employed by movie studios from the 1930s to 1960s with his most famous portraits immortalizing Hollywood's greatest icons and helping to define the era as the Golden Age of Cinema.
