Per secoli l'arte, come del resto anche la storia, ha parlato solo dei potenti. L'artista sviluppava le sue capacità e si gua-dagnava da vivere ritraendo i nobili della corte, cortigiani e cortigiane, nel modo in cui essi desideravano che i loro pari e i posteri li vedessero. Il cinema è stata la prima forma d'arte fatta per le masse e, in buona parte, dalle masse, ma anch'essa aveva le sue altezze reali, le star, e i loro artisti: i fotografi di Hollywood. Mentre però i soggetti dei quadri del passato erano celebri per nascita, oppure erano diventati tali prima di sedersi di fronte al ritrattista, le star del cinema, sia quelle già tali che le promesse, dipendevano dai fotografi delle case di produzione. Questi artisti, poco celebrati, più che immortalare la bellezza e la celebrità, le creavano. Mediante giochi di ombre e di luci, trasformavano volti di commesse e fattorini in qualcosa che lo spettatore avrebbe percepito come straordinario. Creando quelle immagini così attraenti, provocanti e seducenti, generarono il divismo. "Non c'è che un solo istante in cui un essere umano dotato di bellezza è veramente bello", ha detto Thomas Mann. Queste immagini, provenienti dal passato di Hollywood, rappresentano quell'istante, quando colui o colei che incarnava la bellezza, molto ammirato e censurato, appariva in tutta la sua perfezione, simbolo dei desideri della nostra ci-viltà. Quelli che scelgono di vedere le grandi star di Hollywood facendo riferimento solo alle condizioni economi-che, politiche, sociali e tecnologiche di quegli anni, non possono capire ciò che quei fotografi crearono. Niente di tutto ciò spiega la straordinaria quantità di fotografie di scena che documentarono la leggenda di quelle grandi star. Sebbene i ritratti fossero soltanto un sottoprodotto di Hollywood, uno degli aspetti più notevoli di queste immagini è che erano il frutto di una collaborazione creativa tra soggetto e fotografo. L'artista poteva accedere continuamente ai suoi modelli, disponendo di tutto il tempo e il denaro necessari, da pochi mesi a più di dieci anni.
