(ca. 38 x 28 cm). 16 S. Original-Broschur mit illustriertem Deckeltitel (Abbildung: Hitler und Göring). (= Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung: Nr. 50, 1941). Einband leicht gebräunt und gerändert, sonst gut erhalten. Altersentsprechend guter Zustand. Die Ausgabe erschien am Tag der Kriegserklärung der USA an die Achsenmächte und damit dem Eintritt der Vereinigten Staaten in den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Die ersten 2 Seiten zeigen Hitler mit mehreren Außenministern verbündeter Länder wie Finnland, Kroatien, Italien und Bulgarien bei einem Treffen in Berlin. Später folgt ein längerer Text zur "Leistung" deutscher Schnellboote auf See. Ein Kurzbeitrag widmet sich der Verbindung der US-Regierung mit mehreren jüdischen Filmproduzenten Hollywoods. Ein weiterer Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit den sowjetischen Ratas (Flugzeugen), die aus deutscher Sicht in der englischen Propaganda maßlos überhöht werden. Es folgt eine Doppelseite mit dem Titel "Gefangene erzählen. 14 Einzelschicksale aus der Sowjet-Union", hierfür wurden Texte und Porträts versammelt. Was wie Journalismus aussieht ist jedoch Teil einer interessanten Propaganda, denn die 14 Gefangenen werden ausnahmslos mit ihren (schlechten) Erfahrungen in der Roten Armee und im Land daheim zitiert. Es folgen einige unterhaltende Artikel für die Berliner, sowie auch zahlreiche zeitgenössische Werbeanzeigen. Aufgrund des Zeitpunkts Ende 1941 (Im Krieg mit der UdSSR, anstehender Kriegseintritt der USA) liegt hier eine sehr politische Berliner Illustrierte Zeitung vor. The letterhead consists of a stylized vertical arrangement of the letters in the name ‘JOY’ at top left. The ‘signature’ is an extremely good facsimile in black ink. Begins: ‘Dear Friend: / Your request for my picture made me very happy as you must know my fan mail is the only medium whereby it is made known to me to what extent my humble efforts please.’ She requests confirmation of receipt of ‘the picture’ as ‘it will serve me later to know that I have your correct address and allow me to mail you at some future date a new picture’. Having returned from 'a rather long painting expedition to France' he finds that 'circumstances have arisen in regard to the administration of the Society' the Society of British Film Art Directors and Designers of which Craig was a leading light and in the light of these circumstances Irving feels compelled to resign. 'It is . unlikely that I shall design any more films. Life is short and there is so much to be done that even if anybody wished me to I should hesitate to commit myself to the months not only of work but of preoccupation which a film production involves. Quite apart from this I feel that the principles of film design which however wrongly I have always advocated are being abandoned naturally in the face of economic pressure and the general registration of film making. I am old fashioned enough to believe that the situation into which films have fallen is very largely due to the insistance sic of those who have misguidedly and not very successfully tried to make it into an industry rather than a medium of expression for groups of artists of enterprise and imagination.' Two more paragraphs follow before the letter ends. TWO: 1p. 4to. Following the last letter Irving has been offered honorary membership of the Society and writes: 'I do not feel that I deserve such consideration for you and several others have striven hard to maintain the prestige of Art Directors in the gruelling factory conditions of commercial studios through good and bad times. However as you well know to an artist the only commendation or criticism which really touches him is that of his fellow craftsmen .'. He offers his assistance to the Society before ending: 'I heard from Flower that your meeting in London was a success and that you are going to get out drawings and plans for the proposed Elizabethan theatre.
