Questa antologia di racconti racchiude molti degli spunti narrativi che caratterizzano la produzione letteraria di James Ellroy. Il lettore precipita direttamente sulla scena del crimine, fra omicidi irrisolti e sogni infranti, ossessioni che vengono dal passato e incubi che vivono nel presente. Il racconto centrale è "L'assassinio di mia madre" in cui lo scrittore narra la sua vicenda autobiografica e riprende il fascicolo dell'indagine sull'omicidio della madre: lo studia attentamente, osservando minuziosamente le foto, anche le più orribili e impressionanti. Da qui si apre un percorso psicologico che lo condurrà al ritrovamento della madre e farà di lui uno scrittore. Jules Parma, Giulio Tani, Kaiser Zha e Louis Sasson erano però tutti Cesare Zavattini, che oltretutto non si era mai mosso da Milano.
