The classic North By Northwest is a 1959 spy thriller starring Cary Grant Eva Marie Saint and James Mason regarded as one of the greatest films made. It was influential on the James Bond franchise and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. series where Leo G. Carroll played a similar role as head of a top secret intelligence agency. The story of an ad-man mistaken for a fictitious agent was inspired by the wartime Operation Mincemeat where Naval Intelligence including Commander Ian Fleming obtained a dead body and invented a military courier furnished with misleading documents. Upon discovery by the Germans off the Spanish coast Hitler fell for the deception countered accordingly and the course of the war changed irrevoccably. The film garnered thre Oscar nominations won an Edgar Award Best Screenplay and a Silver Shell Best Director San Sebastian Festival.
