WALTER-FILM000149No binding. Fine. Fine Art Print Vintage original 11 x 14"" 28 x 35 cm. lobby card USA. Marlene Dietrich Sam Jaffe John Loder C. Aubrey Smith Gavin Gordon dir: Josef von Sternberg; Paramount. One of the finest lobby cards for one of film history's most truly bizarre movies. Perhaps this was Sternberg's answer for Dietrich to her great competitor Greta Garbo's Queen Christina. While that film attempted to tell an accurate historical account of a historic queen this film was a major experiment in style. The basis was the story of Princess Sophia of Germany who is taken to Russia to marry half wit Grand Duke Peter played with aplomb insanity by Jaffe. The Princess is repulsed by him finds love with a Russian soldier and produces a son. No one asks questions and she moves on to become Catherine the Great. Much of the film was silent and drenched in Gothic sets set pieces and artifice shot through diffusions of all kinds and lit in expressionistic ways which have never been duplicated. It became an homage by Sternberg who was by now obsessed to Dietrich. Dietrich is swathed in a fur creation by Travis Banton. There are a few scattered pinholes to an otherwise perfect card with vibrant colors FINE. unknown books

Edward Sutherland; Paramount. A great glimpse into life of the late-1920s this early talkie left behind the typical Bow character and presented her in a subdued role. It is the story of two sisters who work as salesgirls in a department store. The younger sister is played by Jean Arthur in a very early lead role she the unsympathetic character who stabs her sister in the back. Both girls are in love with the same store clerk. Clara again appeared with James Hall as her leading man and he is with her in this fantastically colored card. A few pinholes FINE. unknown books

His uncle sends him to the city to learn about the ways of the world which includes the hiring of three chorus girls to oversee his education. Of course several other girls want to help out as well and thus the title. It was all presented in the very ""naughty"" atmosphere of pre-Code Hollywood. WALTER-FILM000759No binding. Very Good. Photo Vintage original 8 x 10"" 20 x 25 cm. black-and-white single weight glossy silver gelatin print still photo USA. Clive Brook H. Reeves-Smith Betty Lawford Charles Hay Phillips Holmes Donald Crisp dir: Basil Dean; Paramount. The very first Sherlock Holmes film to be produced with sound and in which the immortal line ""Elementary my dear Watson"" was uttered on-screen though it does not appear in the writings of Arthur Canon Doyle. Made at the Paramount Kaufman Astoria Studios in New York and employing actors of the theatre this early Holmes effort is an antique curiosity today full of gadgets and gizmos which have little to do with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The story also updated the setting to the present day. Clive Brook was known for his understated interpretation of the main character and he featured at right along with H. Reeves Smith as Dr. Watson and Betty Lawford as Marry Watson. Unfortunately the sound disks to this film are presently lost. Still 1221-36 includes the Paramount logo and title information along the bottom blank white margin. Actor's names written in pencil on verso. Right blank white margin edge a bit irregularly trimmed for publication NEAR FINE. unknown books

WALTER-FILM000182No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Vintage original 14 x 36"" 35 x 91 cm. insert poster USA. James Stewart Grace Kelly Wendell Corey Thelma Ritter dir: Alfred Hitchcock; Paramount. The story of an apartment-bound man who takes an interest in the many neighbors living in the building behind him including the revelation of a murder. An interesting aspect which helped create the world in which James Stewart's character lived is that all of the sounds were ""live"" -- all dialogue the sounds of people autos and all music cues were sounds which were live within the story. Just another wonderful Hitchcock touch. Minor border wear repaired and touched-up without necessitating tape or backing. Insert appears to have never been folded NEAR FINE. unknown books

Hitchcock was so popular in these countries by 1960 that his image would greatly enhance the selling of a film. The famous cut out of Hitchcock pointing to his watch was installed inside and outside all theatres showing the film indicating that no patrons would be allowed into the theatre once the film had started.
