From the Colophon

"Bert Stern was an American photographer best known for his iconic portraits of Marilyn Monroe. With a photo shoot that took place in 1962 just weeks before the actress' death Stern later compiled his image into the photobook Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting first published in 1982. Born on October 3 1929 in Brooklyn NY Stern taught himself how to take photographs as a youth. Over the course of his career Stern changed the landscape of fashion and advertising photography by creating dynamic stand-alone images that no longer existed simply to serve the text. He emerged alongside Richard Avedon Mark Shaw and Irving Penn as a pioneer of this new confrontational style. Stern died at the age of 83 on June 26 2013 in New York NY. Notable exhibitions of his work include "I Wanna Be Loved By You: Photographs of Marilyn Monroe" shown at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and "The Last Sitting" at the Musée Maillol in Paris."

HBS 69202.

$22500. 1956151580Garden City New York: Doubleday & Company Inc 1956. First edition in book form of the famed actress's ghostwritten piece for Pageant magazine often considered the closest thing to an autobiographical work published during her lifetime. Octavo original cloth illustrated with 43 photographs. Signed by Marilyn Monroe on the front free endpaper. Although Monroe was an avid reader—as demonstrated by the celebrated 1999 Christie’s sale of her personal library—books bearing her signature are exceptionally rare. The present volume is the only work published during her lifetime that was directly derived from her own words as recorded in contemporaneous interviews. Her only formal autobiography My Story was issued posthumously in 1974. From the library of critic photographer and artist Paul McMahon who served as a stage manager for Marlene Dietrich for more than thirteen years. McMahon obtained Monroe’s signature in person at a 1957 theatrical performance in New York City having learned in advance that she would be in attendance with her then-husband Arthur Miller. Monroe was not known to sign books and did so only rarely; on this occasion however she appears to have been taken by surprise by McMahon’s request and nevertheless obliged reportedly despite Miller’s evident irritation. Very good in a very good dust jacket. Jacket photograph of Marilyn Monroe by Topix. Jacket design by Sydney Butchkes. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Accompanied by a full Letter of Authenticity from JSA. Exceptionally rare no signed copy of any comparable biographical work has appeared at auction in the past half century. Authored by Pete Martin 1901–1980 a longtime Hollywood reporter and noted ghostwriter of celebrity narratives Will Acting Spoil Marilyn Monroe is presented in the form of a semi-fictionalized dialogue in which a group of interlocutors including Monroe herself alternately reflect upon her life and career. The text is based on a series of extensive interviews conducted by Martin with Monroe between 1955 and 1956 during the period in which she was studying method acting under Lee Strasberg. The resulting work conveys a notable degree of intimacy between writer and subject and captures Monroe’s reflections on fame vulnerability artistic ambition and her persistent desire to be regarded as a serious actress. It is within this text that several of her most frequently cited remarks first appeared including “I think people need human warmth even when they're asleep and unconscious†“Those who know me better know better†and in reference to her nude calendar “I'm saving a copy of it for my grandchildren.†Although Martin undoubtedly shaped the material into a coherent narrative the voice that emerges remains recognizably Monroe’s own. 1962151448London: Jonathan Cape 1962. First edition of the ninth novel in Ian Fleming’s James Bond series. Octavo original black cloth. Boldly signed by eleven cast members of the 1977 film adaptation on the title page and facing page including: Roger Moore Caroline Munro Olga Bisera Sue Vanner Shane Rimmer Eva Rueber-Staier Marilyn Galsworthy Valerie Leon Edward de Souza Vernon Dobtcheff and director John Glen. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light toning and rubbing. Written with Vivienne Michel. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. A unique example. In light of the novel's immense presence as a classic thriller it's amusing to learn that it was at first poorly received. The novel was banned in several countries due to its heightened sexual writing. The reception was so bad that Fleming wrote to Michael Howard of the Jonathan Cape publishing company to explain why he wrote the book: "I had become increasingly surprised to find my thrillers which were designed for an adult audience being read in schools and that young people were making a hero out of James Bond . So it crossed my mind to write a cautionary tale about Bond to put the record straight in the minds particularly of younger readers . the experiment has obviously gone very much awry" Chancellor 2005. Upon Fleming's request no reprints were made until after his death in 1964. It was the basis for the tenth film in the James Bond series starring Roger Moore Barbara Bach and Curt Jürgens. It was directed by Lewis Gilbert and the screenplay was written by Christopher Wood and Richard Maibaum. Jonathan Cape hardcover

LIMITED DELUXE EDITION PHOTO-BOOK DOCUMENTING THE PUBLIC RESPONSE TO THE DEATH OF MARILYN MONROE; WITH TWO SIGNED ORIGINAL PRINTS; COPY A OUT OF ONLY 26 LETTERED COPIES. Front-page news across the US and Europe the death of Marilyn Monroe on Saturday 4 August 1962 shocked all who had come to know and love the star over her dramatic rise to fame in the proceeding decade. Just as Monroe has captured the public's imagination in her lifetime her unexpected passing launched a flurry of media attention riddled with everything from conspiracy theories involving the Kennedys to critiques of ever-invasive paparazzi.

Photojournalist Leigh Wiener 1926-1993 was there the morning of Sunday 5 August on assignment for Life Magazine to cover the unfolding dramatic aftermath. In his career Wiener documented a wide array of public and private events featuring celebrities of all walks of life including every US President from Truman to Reagan. As noted in Prospectus for his Marilyn: A Hollywood Farewell virtually all of Hollywood were barred from Monroe's funeral service making Wiener's documentation of Monroe's death singular and unmatched: "Wiener is the only person to have photographed the actress during her life the scenes of her death at her Brentwood home photographed her at the Los Angeles County Morgue and to have witnessed with a camera her controversial funeral. These circumstances guarantee that there can never again be a book like A Hollywood Farewell."

WIENER LEIGH. Marilyn: A Hollywood Farewell. Los Angeles: 7410 Publishing Company 1990. After founding MMP Monroe moved to Manhattan and spent 1955 studying acting where she began dating actor Marlon Brando and playwright Arthur Miller. On June 29 Monroe and Miller were married at the Westchester County Court in White Plains New York; two days later they had a Jewish ceremony at the home of Kay Brown Miller's literary agent in Waccabuc New York. With the marriage Monroe converted to Judaism which led Egypt to ban all of her films. Due to Monroe's status as a sex symbol and Miller's image as an intellectual the media saw the union as a mismatch as evidenced by Variety's headline "Egghead Weds Hourglass." Monroe and Miller separated after the filming of Lets Make Love in 1960 after both carried on extramarital affairs Monroe with her co-star Yves Montand and Miller with set photographer Inge Morath. unknown books

32820468
Hollywood icon Marilyn Monroe at the beginning of her career. Signed by the photographer in silver ink.

Ed Clark was a top photographer for Life magazine in the 1940s 50s and 60s. In 1950 he received a call from a friend at 20th Century Fox wondering if he wanted to photograph "a hot tomato" the little-known 24 year-old actress Marilyn Monroe. Her film career had just begun to gain momentum: three months earlier Monroe had appeared as a crooked lawyer's girlfriend in The Asphalt Jungle. Two months later she had a small role as an aspiring starlet in All About Eve.

In a 1999 interview Clark recalled "She was almost unknown then so I was able to spend a lot of time shooting her." "We'd go out to Griffith Park in Los Angeles and she'd read poetry. I sent several rolls to LIFE in New York but they wired back 'Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe'"

Printed later by Clark. Ektacolor print. 14 x 11 in. Minor faults in the negative. Fine.

High-intensity shaking was felt from Eureka on the North Coast to the Salinas Valley an agricultural region to the south of the San Francisco Bay Area. Devastating fires soon broke out in San Francisco and lasted for several days. More than 3000 people died and over 80% of the city was destroyed. The event is remembered as the deadliest earthquake in the history of the United States. The death toll remains the greatest loss of life from a natural disaster in California's history and high on the lists of American disasters. Early death counts ranged from 375 to over 500. However hundreds of fatalities in Chinatown went ignored and unrecorded. The total number of deaths is still uncertain but various reports presented a range of 700–3000. In 2005 the city's Board of Supervisors voted unanimously in support of a resolution written by novelist James Dalessandro "1906" and city historian Gladys Hansen "Denial of Disaster" to recognize the figure of 3000 as the official total. Most of the deaths occurred within San Francisco but 189 were reported elsewhere in the Bay Area; nearby cities such as Santa Rosa and San Jose also suffered severe damage.

Condition: Some general wear most cards a bit curled as is most common for vintage stereoscopic cards else very good housed in two notebooks in archival holder.
Underwood, Keystone, H. 198022145np ca. mid-1980s. Very good . Square folio brown faux-leather contemporary commercial album. Containing 97 color photographs loosely inserted in compartmented plastic sleeves six to a page. Most 3"x 5" some smaller with some Poloroids. A couple of images trimmed a few more creased. Some annotations to versos. Else well-preserved. Easily very good or better overall.

Large collection of almost 100 color photographs of various cross-dressers assembled by "Marilyn" addressed on versos of several photos likely a fellow enthusiast. With only minor repetition of subjects and many photos stamped with names addresses or inscribed on their versos several lengthy this collections appears to be less a portrait of a local community or established circle and more that of a practitioner reaching out through the mail undoubtedly through zines and personal ads. Further to this cataloguer at least these images seem to document primarily neither drag gay nor transgender subjects but instead to be of a more fetishistic bent — though obviously with some overlap. As the caption on one photo reads: "I really love to wear very sexy sheer silly bra panties garter belts sheer stockings high heel slippers & flowing full length sheer negligee. I feel so much like a very sensuous feminine shemale then." A smaller section 24 total of sexually explicit images segregated at the end of the album lends further credence this view. Dated photos converge around the mid-eighties a period when cross-dressing was still poorly accepted. Indeed the height of the AIDS crisis must have contributed to a feeling of even greater isolation with underground communications such as these often providing the only outlet for fellowship. A valuable document from a sexually marginalized community. hardcover books
