195515973JNew York: Hollywood Dreamgirl 1955. First Edition. An original issue of ‘Hollywood Dreamgirl’ magazine No. 1 featuring in-depth articles on James Dean ‘Actor Turns Photographer’ illustrated with four pages of black & white photographs taken by Dean of actress Pier Angeli and an article on Marilyn Monroe ‘Three Encounters with a Love Goddess’ story and photographs by Philippe Halsman. Lightly used copy with a touch of dust soiling and with a few short marginal tears. The article on James Dean refers to his work in Elia Kazan’s classic adaptation of John Steinbeck’s novel ‘East of Eden’ and notes that while on the set of the film he seized a camera from the still photographer’s gear case and began taking photographs of Pier Angeli who was visiting the set. The editors of ‘Hollywood Dreamgirl’ were so impressed by the results that they chose to print them in this issue. At the time Dean was involved in a romantic relationship with Miss Angeli whom he met while she was shooting ‘The Silver Chalice’ on an adjoining Warner lot. Tragically Dean died in a car accident near Cholame California on September 30 1955. He received a posthumous Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role as Cal Trask in ‘East of Eden’ the first of two he would receive in this manner the second being for his work as Jett Rink in ‘Giant.’ Dean had an interest in photography and these striking and accomplished images of Angeli are the only James Dean photographs published in his lifetime. The article on Marilyn Monroe runs for 13 pages and includes text and black & white photographs by the great portrait photographer Philippe Halsman whose photographs of Monroe are some of the most iconic of her career including the terrific cover color photo on the November 9 1959 issue of ‘Life’ magazine of the lovely actress in which she is laughing and jumping while wearing a sexy backless black dress. In this ‘Hollywood Dreamgirl’ article there are many views of Marilyn Monroe depicting her emotional range as an actress her great beauty and allure and a wonderful pair of photographs of her ‘walking with a wiggle’ taken by Halsman on Sunset Boulevard before she was famous showing her dressed in a modest knee length skirt and white blouse taken from behind with one shot of her looking back over her shoulder. At the time of this article Miss Monroe was promoting her work in Billy Wilder’s classic comedy film ‘The Seven Year Itch.’ Halsman’s text is rich in detail and personal memories of his work with Monroe. The front cover black & white photographic portrait of Grace Kelly is also by Philippe Halsman. Other actresses appearing in this issue include Doris Day Ann Francis Zsa Zsa Gabor Mitzi Gaynor Audrey Hepburn Susan Hayward Janet Leigh Dorothy Malone Jayne Mansfield Sheree North Kim Novak Jane Powell Jane Russell Susan Strasberg Mamie Van Doren Esther Williams etc. Hollywood Dreamgirl unknown books

002291Very Good. N.d. circa 1940. 9 page story. The story is told in quasi-black dialect and there is probably a racist dimension to the story involving a black family although the author may not have had an invidious intent at the time. While the illustrations are a bit crude and possibly deliberately so the author does have a comedic spark notwithstanding the offense someone might take to it. Certainly an interesting relic from an era when there were no inhibitions with regard to stereotyping. <br /><br /> books

After being invited by Igor Stravinsky to perform at the 1956 Venice Festival Horne remained in Europe performing for three seasons with the Gelsenkirchen Opera. This small city in Germany's industrial west significantly raised its artistic profile with the opening of the modernist Musiktheater im Revier in 1959. <br/><br/>"Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top. In concert she once achieved the feat of singing in a single programme Rossini arias and Brünnhilde's Immolation Scene proof of her exceptional versatility. 318987 photographs each 90 x 130 mm. Black and white glossy. In a blue cardstock Kodak "Album Prints" wrapper with Horne's manuscript annotation to upper "The Arthur Godfrey Show 1954!."<br/><br/>From the collection of the distinguished American mezzo-soprano Marilyn Horne b. 1934. Horne auditioned for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts in Los Angeles singing for radio star Goodman Ace 1899-1982. She recounts the experience in her autobiography Marilyn Horne: The Song Continues p. 72:<br/><br/>Goodman a brusque Runyonesque heart-of-gold character had had a bellyful of talent by the time I got to him.<br/>"Okay kid whatcha gonna do" he queried disinterestedly.<br/>"I'm going to sing an operatic aria."<br/>"Esshhh" sighed Goodman obviously not bowled over by my announcement. He sat back with his eyes closed as I sang "Ritorna vincitor" from Aida. When I finished his eyes were wide open.<br/>"What else can you do kid" he asked enthusiastically.<br/>This time I sang a popular song of the day and when I finished Goodman blasted me.<br/>"Are you crazy to sing junk like that with a voice like yours!"<br/>"Listen" I shot back "I'll sing anything!"<br/>"That's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. You stick to opera kid."<br/><br/>She was given a spot on the show in 1955 and performed "Un bel dì" from Madame Butterfly. In Horne's words: "I sang the hell out of it and won." It was her first appearance on national television and her success meant that she was able to sing on Godfrey's radio show every day for a week. <br/><br/>"Horne had a voice of extraordinary range rich and tangy in timbre with a stentorian chest register and an exciting top.
