VG book. 8vo xvi17-5742pp. Many in text illus & full page plates. Newly rebound in brown leather w orig spine labels. . According to BAL "AGE" just came on the market Christmas day 1873. Firsts Magazine vol 8 # 7/8 says it came on the market Dec 11 '73 and 12000 copies sold that year. BAL & Firsts Magazine both state the very first printings had "Eschol" on pages vii 27 247 and 355as does this copy. Eschol was quickly changed to Beriah. "Firsts" believes this corection nwas done in the 2nd printing. Very early copies also have the line repeats on pages 351 2 & 3. This copy DOES NOT have these repeats. But it has all the other BAL 1st state points. BAL also says the genuine tp also includes "White" as one of the illustrators and "Wm H Lockwood" is on the verso as does this copy. A variant tp contained neither White nor Lockwood. Not sure if these tp & cp points for the 1873 edition apply also to the 1874 edition. This copy is a very early printing. Fold out "SALT LICK" has been folded wrong but there are no tears. Tight no loose pages very nice inside. Just a few soiled or foxed spots. Labels are gilt lettered black leather so originally bound in sheep. Twain's indictment of the Robber Baron era and the present!!!!! . American Publishing Co hardcover

This is a very handsomely bound book with blue cloth covers and bright gold designs and text on the covers. There is a large Fold-Out MAP of Wisconsin in the back and there are a couple more Fold-Outs in the front that show Diagrams of The Senate Chamber and The Assembly Chamber. There are also many more illustrations throughout showing important Buildings and Architecture of the State. The book is complete with 578 pages plus the fold outs. The book is Clean Solid and in Very Good Condition - all the pages are nice and clean the paper is strong and supple the fold outs are in great shape with no tears the binding is strong with all pages firmly attached. The blue covers are also in great condition with some light edgewear. I have placed the book in a fresh mylar jacket and the book looks and feels great - this is a rare and important book that documents the early Political and State History of Wisconsin I could find no other copies of this book available for sale. An octavo measuring 8 3/4 by 5 1/4 inches with the leather at the head of the spine worn down to the text block and shallow chipping of the leather at the heel of the spine. There is also considerable foxing throughout the pages but none so bad as to render the text unreadable. 576 pages of text illustrated with a frontispiece and throughout the text with line drawings and wood cut engravings by the author. Signed. 8vo; 7 1/2†x 5 1/8†rebound in 3/4 tan calf over marbled boards with gilt rule to the edges; 346 pages with frontispiece and other illustrations throughout; the front hinge has been very discreetly reinforced.~~Tipped in is an ALS from Charles Dudley Warner with interesting content regarding the naming of a character in the book. The letter is addressed to Eleanor Kilham a person of interest in her own right. A medical doctor engaged in private practice in New York at the outbreak of World War I she sailed for France on the first ship out after the sinking of the Lusitania. For her work in France she received the Medaille d’Honneur and the Medaille de Reconaissance d’Honneur. After the war she devoted herself to welfare work in New York see New York Times April 6 1937.~~The letter is dated Hartford Aug. 10 1893. It reads: “Dear Elenaor A thousand thanks for your suggestion about Jane Brown. I always did hate it. The confounded plebeian “ sound of it hampered me. Your word has given me the stimulus “ to eradicate it. Can you suggest a fitting name How would Ellen Leigh or Emiliy Leigh do It must be as un- common and yet dignified.â€~~The protagonist is in fact named Ruth Leigh and one supposes that Eleanor Kilham had something to do with that.~~~~. Twain's satirical first novel written in collaboration with his friend Charles Warner 1829-1900 a book whose title and theme remain relevant today. This is a Very Good copy of the First Edition in a mixed state. Points that are either present or lacking include: list of illustrators on title page includes "White" with Lockwood electrotyper on verso but the date of publication is 1874; the name "Eschol Sellers" changed in later editions remains on p. vii; there is no "Halleluyah" on p.246; Dr. Jackson on p. 280 is accompanied by a period; and p. 403 has no illustration. The fold-out map at p. 246 is present. The binding is full leather with four bands and is a bit dry and flakey; the spine label black with gilt lettering is rubbed but still readable. The text is clean and bright; foxing is minimal; most of the pages however are browned at their edges. Withal a decent copy of this wonderful and important book. Also mentioned is Warner's Safe Cook-Book "the most valuable family recipes ever published." Lightest discoloration to some leaves otherwise fine in wrappers boldly decorated with a woodcut of a child sitting stop a sea captain's shoulder. Laid-in is a printed addendum a warning against falsely advertised products with a guide to telling the fakes from the real Warner's nostrums. Scarce. Through interpreters Warner spoke with everyone he could to soak up as much of the Egyptian life as possible while he traveled around what was at the time considered an unknown part of the world to many Americans.
