Includes a facsimile of his signature. "Copies were sold in Providence by Abraham Stillwell a local bookseller. Stillwell began advertising the sale of the likeness of Dorr beginning with the June 20 1842 issue of the Providence Daily Express. Stillwell's ad read 'GOV. DORR Just published and for sale at No. 1 Market square a Portrait of Thomas W. Dorr elected Governor of the State of Rhode Island under the People's Constitution'." Oblong 4to. measuring 26 x 31 cm. Illustrated bay card-covers bearing bright gilt lettering to the centre and held with its original string binding. Wonderfully illustrated with striking black-and-white period photographs of the young city of only 7250 persons. Includes views of its many notable landmarks including its City Hall various houses of worship agricultural scenes and vignettes its banking and centres of commerce one stunning full-page plate depicting Indigenous leader Light Feather many views of Brandon-area grain elevators and much else. Light chips along the edges of the covers faint foxing to the preliminary pages and rear endpaper else leaves quite well-preserved. Overall very good. Exceedingly rare in commerce. There is a closed one-inch tear at the center fold. Age toned. Very good. W. Harding Warner 1816 - 1894 was a British photographer specializing in architecture and landscapes. He issued stereo cards as well as two illustrated guides A SKETCH OF TYNTERN ABBEY and A SKETCH OF ROSS AND ITS NEIGHBORHOOD; both are broadsides with a single albumen photograph historical text and a scaled drawing.
