Warner records observations on landscape antiquities local history and architecture moving deliberately through places including Glastonbury Wookey Cheddar Ilfracombe Barnstaple Chudleigh Dawlish Exmoor Wells and Bath. Written in an antiquarian and observational style the work reflects the period’s growing interest in domestic travel and regional history. Illustrated with a frontispiece an additional plate and in-text illustrations throughout.<br /> <br /> Bound in 3/4 calf over marbled boards with five raised bands gilt rules and borders to the spine and a gilt title over a dark spine label. Illustrated with engraved plates and in-text illustrations.<br /> <br /> It is in Very Good condition. Heavy shelf wear with rubbed and bumped corners a one-inch split to the top of the front hinge minor foxing throughout and scattered pencil annotations in places. This paper <strong>A Remarkable Case of an Aneurism or Disease of the principal Artery of the Thigh Ocasioned by a Fall. To which is prefixed a short Account of the Uncertainty of Distinguishing Symptoms of this Disease. By Jos. Warner F.R.S and Surgeon to Guy's Hospitaly</strong> was presented to the Royal Society on November 17 1757 and published in 1758 in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society Vol. 50 Part 1 pages 363 to 370. The paper which has been disbound from the Transactions measures approximately 6 x 8.5 inches. The pages are tanned but the text is clear and easily read. The overall condition of the item is good/very good.</p><p>The illustrations accompanying this description show the first page of the article plus three typical pages.</p><p><strong>Joseph Warner</strong> 1717 - 1801 was a British surgeon. He was the first to tie the common carotid artery an operation he performed in 1775. He was elected surgeon to Guy's Hospital on 22 February 1746 a post he resigned on 30 JUne 1780. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society on 6 December1750 and on 5 April 1764 he was chosen a member of the court of assistants of the Corporation of Surgeons. Warner 1763-1857 moved to Lymington as a child and spent his life in the church producing many works of history and travel. Hampshire is well known as the birthplace of Jane Austen whose father owned a copy of Warner's Excursions from Bath. Warner's guide was revised and updated under the title The Hand-book for the Town of Lymington the New Forest and the Surrounding Neighbourhood in 1847. Duodecimo pp. ii errata leaf bound out of sequence at front 2 iii-viii 265 1. Bound with half-title. Publisher's pale blue boards paper backstrip edges uncut. Contemporary manuscript title on spine and "No 2" on front board pencil underlinings on three pages.
