1928152558New York: Western Electric Sound System 1928. Vintage small two-color bi-fold housing an early sample of sound film promoting Western Electric's Portable Sound System circa 1928. Likely unique as we have been unable to locate another example.<br/><br/>The front features "A Sample of Sound Film" in bold red font with illustration of a projector and a screen atop support on front panel with the screen being a die-cut window revealing a single frame of film. The image on the film is of playwright George Bernard Shaw from the 1928 Fox Case Movietone News one of the earliest sound newsreels with three frames of film attached by staple to the rear panel also with die cut window allowing the viewer to hold the bi-fold to the light revealing Shaw.<br/><br/>The verso of front leaf beginning with the title "The Voice Behind the Screen" describes the "Western Electric Portable Sound System" featuring a projector amplifier horn and screen designed to fit into four small trunks able to withstand "rough handling in transportation" with a quality compatible to that "of the best equipped theatres." With a contemporary annotation in holograph ink on top of leaf "The Picture is Bernard Shaw." The recto of the second leaf upon which is affixed the three frames of film notes with arrow in red below film strip the "Sound Track" on the film with a simple illustration below a band of horizontal parallel lines noticeable on the film itself between left sprocket holes and film image. To the left of the film strip is the description "This piece of film is a sample of sound film recorded by the Western Electric Sound System." Following below is a physical description and summary explanation of the process "This is called the constant width varying density sound track and is characteristic of all 'Sound-on-Film' recording done by" followed by the Western Electric Sound System logo common to the period. The verso of the second leaf is of an illustration of patrons in a theatre before the screen the screen being the window revealing the still with an illustration in red of a telephone below followed by "Made by the makers of the nation's telephones."<br/><br/>3 x 4.25 inches. A collection of travel photographs most captioned likely taken by a N.E.A. delegate on a 1905 tour of the Southwest which ended in San Antonio and also including some photographs taken in Mexico in a presumed continuation of those travels. Several images mention delegates one sign on the side of a train car reads “welcome N.E.A. delegates†and the route matches one found in contemporary newspaper accounts of a trip through the Southwest in 1905. The images are mix of candid shots and tourist attractions with the Alamo represented as well as several events and some street scenes taken in Mexico. unknown

A charming narrative album detailing a family holiday through Yosemite. Many of the photographs show sweeping scenery together with shots of the travelers themselves including two photos of the children perched on the back of Cakewalk the Donkey. Images are all captioned often providing elevation information. A final image shows two women seated at a folding table outside along with two young girls who appear to be twins and a sleeping man. The two girls are holding newspapers; one eats a sandwich and gazes at the camera. The family car is in the background. The caption reads "In Purussima Creek where the trip was planed sic and 'discussed'. June 3 1923." A lovely little souvenir album of an auto trip to Yosemite. unknown books

19091557Various locations in the West 1909. Very good. Forty-seven leaves containing forty-one photographs 4 x 6 inches supplemented by postcards and a few newspaper clippings. Oblong octavo album. Original leather cover gilt black paper leaves. Spine perished but holding covers worn. Some leaves intentionally trimmed on fore edge. Two photos loose and laid in. Contents clean and fresh. An interesting album documenting a train trip to the Western United States taken by several businessmen from Chicago on a tour to study irrigation investments in Colorado Idaho and Wyoming. The album starts out with panels from the trip brochure pasted onto the first two leaves followed by newspaper clippings documenting the trip as well as a map of the train routes in the west and a sheet of stationery signed by all the members of the party. The trip was organized by Trowbridge & Niver a municipal bond company based in Chicago and one Denver newspaper headline notes "Half-Billion Dollars Represented in Party. Many are already backing projects here and are making trip to investigate." Each photograph is captioned with a typed label documenting stops along the route starting with Fort Morgan Colorado. There are several images of Eldorado Springs including the swimming pool and a large building whose roof says "Moving Pictures" which we presume to be an early movie theatre. There are many group shots of the "Buffalo Party" along the way all looking quite dapper in caps and touring coats out to spend their millions. One image shows the group on a tour by buggy captioned "Our party inspecting irrigated orchards at Palisade Colorado." There are three photographs of Salt Lake City followed by a series in Idaho which includes a charming photo of several women laughing captioned "Shoshone Indians at Pocatello Idaho." There is a series taken along the Snake River in Idaho and Oregon followed by several images taken in Boise. This cataloguer's favorite is a pair of photos taken at the local pool showing the men in their swimsuits: "Buffalonians in the Natatorium Boise." The final four photos depict the group at stops in Wyoming. Throughout the compiler has used postcards to set the scenery for the trip using the photographs to capture the group itself on tour. Altogether a wonderful album documenting a business trip yet assembled like a family vacation album or young woman's scrapbook. The format speaks to the novelty of such a trip even for businessmen in the early years of the 20th century. unknown books

These historic photographs trace the efforts to revive and expand a troubled irrigation system constructed largely by private enterprise from the end of the 19th-Century through to 1905 after the failed Carey Act project was taken over by the US Bureau of Reclamation and the State of Oregon. Unscrupulous land promotion companies and developers such as the Columbia Southern Irrigation Co. had acquired the rights to the Tumalo Creek water flow from the Three Sisters Irrigation Co. and local landowners with the Union Pacific claiming that 18000 acres were tillable but by 1905 less than 1000 acres were supplied with enough water and far too much settlement in the Upper Deschutes River Basin. Within five years Bend is incorporated Laidlaw later Tumalo is platted and unfortunately for the latter the railroad completes to Bend by 1912 bypassing Laidlaw and settlers were incensed. One of the photographs shows a “Good Roads†protest parade by Tumalo residents as they began urging the State of Oregon to improve connections to Tumalo and the roads. The State and Bureau of Reclamation draft noted Civil Engineer Olaf Laurgaard 1880-1945 and transfer him from Okanogan WA where he has been competing roadbuilding and irrigation projects in order to improve and enlarge the Tumalo Project irrigation and canal system as well as build a new reservoir and dam at Wimer Flat. The first part of the album focuses on the survey crews surveying the route the rugged terrain in the area with shots of camp tents hunting mess tents original holding ponds and reservoirs mill wheels falling apart with need for repairs and occasional side trips to the Deschutes River. In addition the Tumalo Project office and Laurgaard’s office building is shown the barn filled with project supplies and other town scenes. These are followed by engineering crews digging and expanding irrigation ditches and canals building wooden water flumes crossing fields and through steep canyons well-digging equipment to reach aquifers and horse teams grading earth with Fresno scrapers. By the close of the album the project is nearing completion wooden flumes stretch across grain fields irritation ditches such as the “Finished Ditch in Howard Canyon†appear in the images and Laurgaard and his crew survey several of the finished areas. Unfortunately even with the newly enlarged canal system and the new well-built dam the new Tumalo Reservoir failed to hold water. By the time this was fully realized Laurgaard had moved onto new projects and become the City of Portland Engineer by 1917. He is perhaps best remembered for construction of the Columbia Slouth drainage channel improving the Ross Island Bridge widening Sandy Blvd. and entirely upgrading and developing the decaying Portland municipal wooden docks and port areas with concrete piers and abutments. In the following decades the Tumalo Irrigation District failed with additional diversion dams and still more canals to the point that it was recommended to the Federal and State Governments to not expend further funds while the City of Bend continued to expand and buy up local Water Rights. Later in the 20th Century the Bureau of Reclamation rebuilt the dam and reservoir at Crescent Lake.
