Publisher's purple cloth with gilt titles to spine photographic dust-jacket by Bob Guccioni priced at 25s. Contents clean no inscriptions near fine in similar jacket. First published in 1961 The Short Night is a romantic espionage thriller set in Finland with a breathtaking climax on the Russian frontier. The film rights were acquired by Alfred Hitchcock in the late '60s and Canadian author Kirkbride adapted his novel to a screenplay. The lead role was reportedly offered to Sean Connery however due to the director's ill health Universal Pictures cancelled the project in 1979. The novel was reviewed by best-selling novelist Alistair Maclean publication unknown with a supporting quote from his review comparing Kirkbride to Ian Fleming appearing on the front panel. The same quote appears on to rear panel with a further comparison to Ian Fleming by Maurice Richardson Observer. Endbands and joints rubbed the latter split to the rear on vol. 1 and with a smaller tear to the front. Spine cover vol. 1 pivoting on the front and with a moderate medial damp-stain. All hinges cracked with crude but effective repairs. Marbled endpapers. Some plates lightly foxed with the text block otherwise notably clean.
