This issue features detailed articles on the towns of Detroit Washington -- now a lost ghost town which existed at one point at the end of Case Inlet West of Tacoma & Federal Way and featured here are illustrations of the Boston & Detroit Manufacturing Co. building in Detroit as well as the Clune Rees & Barlow Co.’s block under construction in 1890 in Detroit both now lost. The other is New Whatcom WA later merged to form Bellingham WA and featured separately in a New Whatcom Washington “Supplement†not included here. L. 18368841Philadelphia: Samuel C. Atkinson 1836. Periodical. Very Good-. The original weekly newspaper disbound from a volume letterpress printed on excellent paper with no weak spots and no watermarks that I could find. Vg-; moderate foxing on the first 2 pages very light afterward. This entertaining 16-p. paper has much travel correspondence fiction and poetry and a section called 'Omnibus Chit-Chat' which includes anecdotes jokes brief news reports and questionable household advice. On page 1 & 2 is printed an "Interesting Letter"; this is actually an understatement. The letter unattributed here is by Robert Campbell one of the heroes of the American fur trade a founder of Kansas City Missouri and a Mississippi steamboat mogul whose boat the 'A.B. Chambers' was piloted by Samuel Clemens in 1859. All that was in the future: this letter is written to his brother Hugh this is its first publication and describes the battle of Pierre's Hole in which Campbell his partner Bill Sublette 'Mr. S.' in the letter and about 60 men including Nez Perce and Flathead scouts fought off an attack by the Blackfeet. The battle was described in Washington Irving's 'Adventures of Captain Bonneville' published in 1837; in an interesting coincidence There is a lukewarm review of Irving's 'Astoria' in this very paper. <br/> <br/> Samuel C. Small piece of tape to front flyleaf. Tidemark staining along the fore-edge margins bleeding a little into the text. Else periodic light foxing and darkening to the pages. Stories originally published in the Christmas edition of "Household Words." This copy is bound in Green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and embossed decorations on all three parts of the covers. The text pages are generally clean and bright.
