First Edition with numerous photographs and illustrations throughout free endpapers lightly spotted a little mild spotting throughout; attractively bound in contemporary niger half roan sides ruled in blind back with raised bands tooled in gilt second compartment with red leather label ruled and lettered in gilt all other compartments tooled with blind lozenge marbled edges a very good bright clean copy. Contains the first appearance of 'Silver Blaze' complete with Paget's inconic illustrations as 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. No. XIII. 'The Adventure of Silver Blaze'. 'Silver Blaze' is of course the classic early tale containing Holmes' famous epigram of the dog in the nightime. It was subsequently collected as the first of the eleven 'Memoirs' published in book form in 1894. This issue also includes Harry How's well-illustrated article 'A Day with Dr. Conan Doyle' pp.182-188. An added Holmesian bonus is the presence of Clarke Russell's 'A Nightmare of the Doldrums' pp.189-198; his tales were a favourite of Dr. Watson: 'I was deep in one of Clark Russell's fine sea stories' 'The Five Orange Pips'. Two uniform volumes of this wide ranging illustrated magazine from the late nineteenth century. A really good source for less well known perspectives on American History of the period. Rather uncommon. Volume XXVIII New Series Vol. VI May 1884 to October 1884. Volume LVII New Series Vol. XXXV.; November 1898 to April 1899. The Century Magazine was first published in the US in 1881 succeeding Scribner's Monthly Magazine. Its content written by numerous contributors included illustrated history articles matters of recent interest and literature. Its American Civil War series included contributions by generals and over 200 Northern and Southern participants of all ranks. It ceased publication in 1930. Each volume is in its original cloth binding with gilt lettering to the spines. Externally both volumes are sound though with some very light rubbing. Some light straining to the rear hinge of the second volume and both hinges to the first volume are tender. Internally both volumes are firmly bound and bright though with the odd spot and handling mark. Bookseller's ink stamp to the front free endpaper of the first volume. Very Good The Century Co; F. Numerous fine line woodcuts used as additional chapter heads or illustrations. Five full page etchings four by Leech browned from the ink in this example as apparently in most others. Early half leather over marbled boards. Joints fragile. Large 4to. 280 mm. Hardbound. Very good. The editor Douglas William Jerrold 1803-1857 was an English dramatist writer editor and wit. He is most closely associated with PUNCH. Punch was a humorous and liberal publication and Jerrold under the pseudonym 'Q' used satire to attack institutions of the day. His liberal satirical inclinations can be seen in 'The Illuminated Magazine' as well. The featured illustrator John Leech 1817-1864 was an enormously popular English caricaturist and artist. Some of the articles are quite remarkable. Often noted are those on social conditions - prisons the poor etc. The articles illustrated by Kenny Meadows 1790-1874 are especially interesting and include one on witchcraft. Another fascinating article we've never seen previously noted is on BOWIE KNIVES. It bears illustrations from one of the Sheffield England manufacturers that exported so many Bowie Knives to the U.S. They became almost ubiquitous in the Civil War especially but not exclusively on the Confederate side. Six spine compartments between raised bands; gilt-stamped title in second compartment: "Putnam's Magazine vol. 1." All page edges red. Marbled endpapers. Edited and with contributions by Charles Frederick Briggs George William Curtis and Parke Godwin. George Putnam sought to focus on American writers and American literature in the magazine he established in 1853. This volume includes first appearance of two poems by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow -- The Warden of the Cinque Ports and Galgano the latter a verse translation of a story from Il Pecorone by Giovanni Fiorentino; The Fountain of Youth by James Russell Lowell; Old Ironsides by James Fenimore Cooper; Ornithomanes by Henry William Herbert; The Living Corpse a Poe-inspired story by the suicidal William North; and three parts of Henry David Thoreau's Excursion to Canada published with additonal material in 1866 as A Yankee in Canada. The focus on American writers includes Briggs' reflections on the popularity of Uncle Tom's Cabin in Uncle Tomitudes; Fitz-James O'Brien in Our Young Authors on Herman Melville; and The Student Life of Daniel Webster by Edwin D. Sanborn. This volume also includes both Henry James Sr.'s declaration of the inferiority of women in his Woman and the "Woman's Movement" and contributions by women writers--Virginia in a Novel Form by Mrs. Hicks Rebecca Brodnax Hicks 1823-1870 who published The Kaleidoscope a weekly newspaper in Petersburg Va.; Mary Spears by Elizabeth F. Ellet 1818-1877 author of The Women of the American Revolution; and Midnight Sun by Fredrika Bremer. It features articles about Cuba Japan and Honolulu; the occult Modern "Spiritualism" by Horace Greeley; Ericsson's caloric ship; New York City in Clarence Cook's series New-York Daguerreotyped and in The Benevolent Institutions of New-York by Charles Loring Brace. It also includes the popular Have We a Bourbon Among Us and The Bourbon Question by Charles H. Hanson who argued that the Rev. Eleazar Williams a missionary to the Indians was actually the dauphin Charles Louis son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. 1831196681831. African American "Negro Slavery": A Poem: An Original Article from the Catholic Magazine. London 1831. 4 pages of an original article separated from the volume. Measures 5.5" x 8.5". The article titled "Poetry" opens with an excerpt of speech made at a meeting for the Anti-Slavery Society by "Mr. Shiel". The speech reads in part "If the sceptic enquires of me why I feel sensation for the Trans-Atlantic Slave I answer him.'I am a man; and in every thing concerning man'.Can we then be afraid of combining in glorious energy for the relief of those who are in so sad of a condition". The featured poem "Negro Slavery" reveals the horrors in the lives of enslaved persons often utilizing irony to illuminate this topic. The unknown author opens the poem with a stark juxtaposition noting that the sun "flings o'er the world all the raptures of light--But oh! what of rapture of bliss or of peace Can it bring to the slave Do his agonies cease Nor darkness nor light can e'ere solace his pain". A true demonstration of empathy the poet urges the reader to comprehend the atrocities that plague the lives of enslaved persons. Pages are loose with pin size holes on left margin as they were removed from a larger volume. Very good condition overall. unknown
