1858871021858. MAGAZINE. A FLORAL WORLD AND GARDEN GUIDE. London: Groombridge and Sons 1858-1876. 19 volumes. Each volume collects a year's periodical issues; and each is illustrated throughout with wood-engraved text illustrations. Most volumes include some plates. Later years from 1869 to 1876 include a dozen full color plates in each volume. The 19 volumes offered here contain a total of 117 plates of which 106 are color. The first six volumes are bound in publisher's decorated brown cloth and the remaining volumes in publisher's decorated dark green cloth. There is occasional spotting throughout the text and to the odd plate. About three of the plates from the later volumes have a moderate crease. Some minor wear at heads and extremities of volumes yet an appealing set. A run of this length is seldom seen. unknown books

Boston: Published by Gilbert and Dean at their Printing-Office No. 78 State-Street 1805. Two complete years of this weekly from 29 October 1803 through 19 October 1805 bound together: Volume II no. 1-52; Volume III no. 1-52. Folio. Pp. vi208;vi208. Text is printed in triple columns. Each volume is preceded by an index arranged according to the style of the piece essay history useful poetry etc. There are two title-pages for Volume III; one is bound at the beginning of Volume II and the other is in its proper place. The title-page for Volume II is lacking. Paper quality varies throughout. Text leaves are age-browned and occasionally lightly soiled and/or foxed mostly light to moderate but in a few instances it is heavy with a few dog-eared corners and occasional edgewear. Volume II no. 41 p. 163-4 has some loss at the bottom fore-corner resulting in a loss of text to the last few lines in one column. Bookblock is splitting with remnants of the backstrip; but the boards are missing. The June 16 1804 issue third page p.135 second column. "Domestick" mentions that Captain Lewis was in Pittsburg "accompanied by twenty Indian chiefs." There are a couple of tohter references to the L&C expedition. unknown books

With the publisher's spine label giving a better idea of the contents than the bare title page might "The Manuscript Being a Series of Original Essays and Tales" this the collected volume of an interesting American serial that ran to twelve numbers of four parts each this second edition having reset the first several numbers and dropped a serialized "Annals of Trinity Church" in New York that appeared in first edition of the 1827 first volume. Comparison to the 1827 first edition of the first volume shows evidence of reset type up through the latter part of the serialized story "Mary Linden" in number two; collected volumes are also seen with cancels mounted to the contents pages which is not the case here. The fictional sketches tend to touch on romantic historical incidents of the American Revolution or of Indian wars and an extensive sketch in the second volume purports to relate a conversation with Thomas Paine in his squalid quarters on what is now Fulton Street shortly before his death with a description of Paine's physical disfigurement and his intemperance suggested. Sabin 28840 attributing the effort to "Griggs sic Rev. Mr." presumably the industrious John Grigg then resident per the 1828 Longworth directory at 419 Grand; Grigg who had earlier published the pseudonymous short tale Manuscript of Diedrich Knickerbocker Jun. in New York in 1824 a romantic historical sketch very much of a piece with the sketches included here of which per Sabin "nearly all the articles relate to America." The North American Review "Quarterly List of New Publications" in the January 1828 number notices the publication of issues number 2 and 3 "New York. C. G. Morgan" which remains something of a mystery remaining to be untangled. The attribution in one instance on OCLC to Rev. Leverette Griggs 1808-1883 seems overly optimistic; this younger Griggs did not graduate from Yale until 1829 and was not ordained until 1832. G. & C. Carvill, and Elam Bliss, unknown books

And that is because the lead-off entry in this anthology of stories is Frank Norris' "Travis Hallett's Half-back." Norris 18701902 was class of '94.<br>Â Â Â Â => It may interest the reader to know that half of the writings in this volume are by women.<br>Â Â Â Â Sole edition. The volume was a fund-raising effort: "The principal reason that these stories have been gathered together and given to the public is to start a fund wherewith to erect a fountain on the Campus of the University of California to be in harmony with the great Hearst architectural plan."<br>Â Â Â Â Binding: Publisher's blue cloth stamped in gilt with title and a scene of a rolling hill with trees on it. In very good condition.<br/><br/> Pages 371/372 of the June 14 1862 edition of Harper's Magazine. Images at top show Robert Smalls and the Confederate gun-boat "Planter". These images are accompanied by the initial six paragraphs of the article relating "one of the most daring and heroic adventures since the war commenced" in which Smalls a small crew and their family members escaped slavery in Charleston by commandeering the Confederate gun-boat and running it the safety of USS Wabash a US Navy steam ship at Port Royal SC. At the bottom of the sheet is an image titled "Feeding the Negro Children Under Charge of the Military Authorities at Hilton Head South Carolina". <br><br>Harper's Weekly was a New York-based illustrated political magazine published from 1857 until 1916. The magazine featured foreign and domestic news fiction essays on many subjects and humor.
