The original paper letterpress printed on laid paper good plus; the bottom left corner is missing no loss of text and there are some black smudges on the inner pages but all is legible. Left side shows signs of removal from a folio binding. No foxing. Most interesting is an article on page 2 on the execution in Britain of Edward Marcus Despard 'The Unfortunate Colonel Despard'. He was hanged then beheaded with his head held up for exhibit before about 20000 spectators. There seems to be no evidence even today regarding his guilt or innocence of the treason charge. The articles prints his last words in which he declares his innocence and closes: "May it be the last account of such a nature that shall appear in this or any other paper!" Originally Despard and his 'conspirators' were sentenced to be drawn and quartered as well; the editor was spared describing that. The last page contains a silly poem recent acts of the Seventh Congress under Jefferson land sales and writs of attachment. <br/> <br/> Michael Burnham unknown

Includes Volume 13 #1 - July 4 1835 through Volume 14 #2 July 9 1836. Illustrated with a frontispiece and additional full page engravings the Mirror contains essays poetry music and fiction. "The Mirror" was a significant literary and cultural magazine in the early 19th century. It played a vital role in promoting American literature and art and provided valuable insights into the cultural life of New York City during that era. It played a pivotal role in promoting American literature publishing works by writers like Walt Whitman Edgar Allan Poe Nathaniel Hawthorne Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper. Binding loose covers have separated and have been haphazardly repaired with seam tape. Covers show chipping and wear. Chipping and loss to leather spine about two inches to bottom and one inch to top. Pages generally clean; a few small tears to outside edge occasional foxing. Approx. 450 pages 10"x13". . Hard Cover. 1831196681831. African American "Negro Slavery": A Poem: An Original Article from the Catholic Magazine. London 1831. 4 pages of an original article separated from the volume. Measures 5.5" x 8.5". The article titled "Poetry" opens with an excerpt of speech made at a meeting for the Anti-Slavery Society by "Mr. Shiel". The speech reads in part "If the sceptic enquires of me why I feel sensation for the Trans-Atlantic Slave I answer him.'I am a man; and in every thing concerning man'.Can we then be afraid of combining in glorious energy for the relief of those who are in so sad of a condition". The featured poem "Negro Slavery" reveals the horrors in the lives of enslaved persons often utilizing irony to illuminate this topic. The unknown author opens the poem with a stark juxtaposition noting that the sun "flings o'er the world all the raptures of light--But oh! what of rapture of bliss or of peace Can it bring to the slave Do his agonies cease Nor darkness nor light can e'ere solace his pain". A true demonstration of empathy the poet urges the reader to comprehend the atrocities that plague the lives of enslaved persons. Pages are loose with pin size holes on left margin as they were removed from a larger volume. Very good condition overall. unknown
