Scarce life of Paolo Sarpi by his disciple Fulgenzio Micanzio 1570-1654. Sarpi 1552-1623 Venetian scholar church reformer and patriot was the author of several works of which the most important is his 'Istoria del Concilio Tridentio' first published in Italian London 1619 with an English translation by Brent in the following year and a French edition by Elzevier in 1661. It was his approach to treat ecclesiastical history in the manner of politics; 'a kind of Anglican picture of the debates and decisions' Hay. His contempt for the Curia made him popular with Protestants; Milton refers to him as 'the great unmasker'. Prudently Sarpi never acknowledged his authorship of the work despite the efforts of Louis II to extract his admission. Willems p.217 n.876. Jean de Ravenstein, Amsterdam, hardcover

"Among the prominent Dutch Hebraists and theologians was Johannes Leusden from the University of Utrecht. One of his most important studies the Philologus Hebræus editio princeps Utrecht 1656 goes far beyond a philological research of the Hebrew language and is a comprehensive study of Judaism and Jewish life. " An entire chapter is devoted alone to Kabbalah and the Kabbalists. For those interested in bibliography there is a pioneering section detailing the known surviving manuscripts of the Bible. Leusden also edited very important editions of the Hebrew Bible including the fames 1661 Athias edition. The team of the Christian Leusden and the Jewish Athias resulted in the attraction of both a strong Jewish and Gentile clientele and very successful publishing venture. ; Latin Hebrew; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; Judaica Kabbalah Jewish Traditions Bible study Kabbalist Kaballah jüdischjüdischeThorahTorasefertalmudJudaicHebraicachanukkiascarce booksignedJudaicaLubavitchANTIQUE . They were originally published as The Rules and Exercises of Holy Living in 1650 and The Rules and Exercises of Holy Dying in 1651. Holy Living is designed to instruct the reader in living a virtuous life increasing personal piety and avoiding temptations. Holy Dying is meant to instruct the reader in the "means and instruments" of preparing for a blessed death. Holy Dying was the "artistic climax" of a consolatory death literature tradition that had begun with Ars moriendi in the 15th century. Jeremy Taylor 1613–1667 was a cleric in the Church of England who achieved fame as an author during the Protectorate of Oliver Cromwell. He is sometimes known as the "Shakespeare of Divines" for his poetic style of expression and he is frequently cited as one of the greatest prose writers in the English language.
