This book is based on her journals and letters. Isaac Collins also a Quaker and New Jersey's second printer printed this first American edition. Hofsekretär und Mitglied einer Freimaurerloge, wurde aber 1782 aus "triftigen Gründen" (Wurzbach) entlassen. Lt. Wurzbach sind seine zahlreichen Werke großteils der Periode der josephinischen Zensurfreiheit zuzuschreiben u. von Interesse für die damalige Zeit- u. Kulturgeschichte, bei Brandl wird er jedoch als Scharlatan u. Betrüger bezeichnet und soll seit 1788 bis zu seinem Tode 1830 in Graz in Gefangenschaft gelebt haben.

1743003140London: T. Meighan 1743. Hardcover. Good . Attributed to John Gother. Vol. 3 only of 3 volumes: 534 p.; 15 cm. Signatures: A-Y12 Z4-Z4 12mo. Contemporary calf with gilt-ruled borders on both boards. Old unskilled leather spine replacement. Inscribed on title page "Rowland Eyre" and in another hand "Hassop Chapel"; back free endpaper has "Prayers for our Country" written on both sides in a hand matching the Rowland Eyre signature. Hassop Chapel was built in 1806 and used until 1838. There have been a number of men named Rowland Eyre who were descendants of the more well-known Rowland Eyre who erected the new Hassop Hall in the 17th century but determining which of them was the owner of this book is not possible. John Gother to whom this volume of prayers is attributed was a 17th-century English convert to Catholicism and the Eyre family were staunch English Catholics who probably knew Gother as he served as chaplain at nearby Warkworth for a time. The family name has been preserved in literature because Charlotte Bronte visited the Eyre family estate naming her heroine Jane Eyre after the family and modelling Thornfield in that novel after Hassop Hall. In Good Condition: amateur but solid spine replacement; lacking last leaf p. 535 the final page of text and a blank page; old repair of edges of pp. 273-74 without loss; 3-cm. tear from fore-edge of pp. 521-22 without loss; occasional creasing to page corners; clean and tight. Volume One contains inter alia his "De Natura et Attributis Divinis." Volume Three contains inter alia "De Beatitudine et Actibus Humanis." Jean-Baptiste Gonet born about 1616 at Béziers in the province of Languedoc died 24 January 1681 at Béziers was a French Dominican theologian. His principal work is the "Clypeus theologiae thomisticae contra novos ejus impugnatores" 16 vols Bordeaux 165969. From 1669 to 1681 no less than nine editions of this work appeared the latest is that of Paris 1875. Shortly before his death he published his "Manuale thomistarum" which is an abridgment of his larger work. As a theologian and academic disputant Gonet ranks among the most prominent figures of his time. An ardent defender and exponent of the teaching of Thomas Aquinas and an illustrious representative of Neo-Thomism he set forth the traditional teaching of his school with clearness and skill with some bitterness against the representatives of different views. Thomistic Philosophy is inspired by the philosophical methods and principles used by Thomas Aquinas 1224/5-1274 a Dominican Friar and Theologian in his explanation of the Catholic faith. Aquinas who is most renowned for his "Five Ways of Proving the Existence of God" believed that both faith and reason discover truth a conflict between them being impossible since they both originate in God. Believing that reason can in principle lead the mind to God Aquinas defended reason's legitimacy especially in the works of Aristotle. The philosophy of Aquinas continues to offer insights into many lingering problems in Metaphysics the Philosophy of Mind Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. .
