And in the beginning of the eighteenth century the Christmas novena held such a distinguished position that the Sacred Congregation of Rites 7 July 1718 in a special case allowed for it alone the solemn celebration with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Decr. Lacking first 4 leaves title page and front matter. Publisher's advertisement on 4 unpaginated pages following text for "W. M'Culloch printer bookseller and stationer No. 306 Market near Ninth-Street Philadelphia." Although lacking title page this first and perhaps only issue of this religious periodical was definitely published by W. M'Culloch William McCulloch as p. 19 contains a letter addressed to "Mr. M'Culloch" regarding the insertion of a letter in "your first number" of his "Christian Magazine." Not in Early American Imprints 1st series Shaw & Shoemaker. No other copies of this publication have been located. It is not known whether there is any connection to the publication of same name begun in Edinburgh 1797. Although his work as a printer is not well-documented in Early American Imprints Evans or Shaw & Shoemaker this is the William McCulloch of "William McCulloch's Additions to Thomas's History of Printing." Contents: On the Gospel by Eubulus; The Extent of a Minister's Work in Preaching the Gospel by Beart; Observations on the Manner of Travelling in the Holy Land from Harmer; On Christian Hope by Benevolus; Extract from a letter from the Rev. Booth of London with a plan for the establishmend of a Baptist Society in London for the encouragement and support of Itinerant Preaching; The Death of the Saints Illustrated by C.R.; An Essay introductory to the Study of the Controversy Between Christians and Deists by Y.; The Life of the Rev. Contemporary full calf with six spine compartments between raised bands. Leather label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title "Lyttelton's Dialogues." Gilt-rolled board edges. All page edges speckled red. Woodcut headpieces and tailpieces. Very small stamp at foot of title page verso reading "Printed in Great Britain." The anonymous author of the majority of these dialogues inspired by Lucian's dialogues is George Lyttelton Baron Lyttelton 1709-1773; the last three dialogues are by Elizabeth Montagu 1720-1800. Among the speakers are "a North-American Savage"; Ulysses; William Penn; Louise de Coligni Princess of Orange; Alexander the Great; Cardinal Wolsey; Lucian; Hercules; and a "modern Bookseller" who complains to Plutarch about being nearly ruined by being unable to sell many copies of Plutarch's Lives and saved by selling fiction -- "secret History in which there is no Secret and no History." In Very Good Condition: minor loss at spine ends; joints are just starting but still solid; scraped along both joints near tail; a few pages are somewhat browned; otherwise clean and tight. J. Woodcut initials headpieces and tailpiece. Commentary is printed in columns. Former owner's inscription on front free endpaper: Charles Porterfield Krauth Winchester Va. 1851. The name and date in a different hand on back fixed endpaper. Charles Porterfield Krauth 1823-1883 was an American Lutheran minister and teacher. In 1851 when he acquired this volume he was the minister of a church in Winchester Va. In 1864 he was asked to lead a new Lutheran seminary in Philadelphia now known as the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. In 1867 he and the Rev. William Passavant founded the General Council of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America composed of bodies that had withdrawn from the General Synod. He was also Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania from 1868 to 1883. In Very Good Condition: vellum is lightly soiled; corners rubbed; minor loss at head of back joint; faint old dampstain at head of gutter for 3/4 of book and occasionally at lower corners; Preface has underlining and marginal notations in red and blue pencil; otherwise clean and tight. Wurzbach sind seine zahlreichen Werke großteils der Periode der josephinischen Zensurfreiheit zuzuschreiben u. von Interesse für die damalige Zeit- u. Kulturgeschichte, bei Brandl wird er jedoch als Scharlatan u. Betrüger bezeichnet und soll seit 1788 bis zu seinem Tode 1830 in Graz in Gefangenschaft gelebt haben.
