Binding is heavily worn. The front cover is detached and the rear cover is nearly so with several cords broken or fraying. Title page is in black and red. Text block is sound and the text has some damping at the fore edge towards the front as well as foxing and some browning. The leather is chipped away from the top two compartments of the spine as well as at the foot of the spine. Text appears complete. Text is in German. Contains daily readings for every day of the year beginning with a line or two of Scripture. Full calf gilt on black title label mounted on spine five raised bands. xii81216 pp. indexed at rear. Leather remains supple and has been cared for as part of a private collection but it shows some surface abrasions and the boards show at least partial exposure along all edges with some loss and layering of underboards at corners loss along joints and at both spine extremities. Flyleaves not original to issue have been inserted with cloth mending tape. This copy lacks title page i/ii but is otherwise complete and has been identified by its pagination and size as the 1774 Burlington imprint. Binding is firm and text block generally tidy showing only light scattered foxing with strong printing throughout. Easily improved cosmetically by rebacking and new corners. Isaac Collins Hardcover

Il fut précepteur du duc de Bourbon. L’original de ce classique fut composé en 1578 par le portugais Thomas de Jésus pendant sa longue captivité parmi les Maures. L’ouvrage fut traduit dans de nombreuses langues. L’originale française du P. Alleaume est de 1692.
