18255684Queretaro 1825. Still very good. 42035pp. Contemporary sheep spine gilt leather label. Moderate wear to corners and edges; boards and spine scuffed. Occasional minor staining and foxing. Accomplished in a small but highly legible script. An extensive manuscript compilation of Catholic doctrines teachings and sermons assembled in Mexico during the early 19th century. The author is unidentified but an engraved indulgence dated 1804 from the Colegio de Santa Cruz in Queretaro is tipped onto the manuscript title page verso leading to the supposition that this work originated at that date and location. The indulgence bears an image of the Virgin of Guadalupe and the Latin phrase "Columba Mea in Forminibus Petrae" and promises various lengths of indulgence from several of the bishops of colonial Mexico. The initial 115 pages contains over thirty entries comprising the author's lessons on church doctrine and other teachings on subjects such as faith hope charity neighborly love marriage and much else. Each entry is headed by a short biblical quotation from which the text takes its prompt. The remaining 340 pages contain over fifty original sermons on a wide variety of topics each also as is traditional with a Bible passage as its inspiration. A detailed table of contents follows the title page. The final four entries are in an altered hand and were added later with last being dated "Zalapa 1825." The Doctrines of Friends: Or Principles of the Christian Religion as Held By The Society of Friends Commonly Called Quakers

1825000556Montpleasant Ohio: Elisha Bates 1825. The author was a prominent Friend or Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s. Bates became the publisher of The Philanthropist from 1818 to 1822. The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States and also supported temperance and the fair treatment of Native Americans. Bates began publishing another periodical The Moral Advocate in March 1821. Bates also became the leader of the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends Quakers. Bates' only book this volume was self-published in 1825. Author Donald Good in his 1969 article "Elisha Bates and Social Reform" states that Bates' Doctrine of Friends was "judged to be one of the best brief accounts of Friends' view in existence." After the publication of his book dramatic changes began to foment within the Quakers religion with what became known as the Hicksite - Orthodox Schism. Bates who favored Orthodoxy was a staunch opponent of Elias Hicks the Hicks in Hicksite who favored liberalism. Bates became a controversial figure. He was disowned converted to Methodist and became a Methodist minister. He late returned to Quakerism. There are three signatures and a personal library stamp on flyleaf - this book has a historical provenance: the first signature is that of Wyman Chamberlain 1772-1838 followed by "his book." Chamberlain was the son of a Revolutionary war soldier and a prominent member of the Friends congregation of Grand Isle Vermont. The next signer in pencil was Mary Chamberlain 1808-1887. Genealogy research suggests that Mary was likely Wyman's daughter-in-law the wife of his only son William. The last signer in ink was Reba B. Hoag. Reba was the sister of Mary the sister-in-law of William and the step-daughter of Wyman. She lived with her sister and brother-in-law. Lastly there is also a personal library stamp of Jed P. Clark. Mr. Clark 1825-1906 was the son of Joseph Clark a very prominent man in Milton Vermont who is still revered today as one of its founding fathers. Jed P. Clark succeeded his father as the owner of the largest town industry - a saw mill and grist mill in Milton Falls Vermont and a director of the Vermont & Canada and Central Vermont railroads. Items related to Jed P. Clark's mercantile store such as its script are still collectible today. Clark was also briefly one of Milton's postmasters. We contacted one of the Quaker libraries and were told that it was "interesting that someone at Grand Isle had Bates' book because Bates was not in agreement with the kind of Quakerism that was practiced there." This is a very interesting and culturally important book particularly for the history of the author and owners. Full leather binding 320 pages. The book has wear commensurate with age: the leather is worn; binding is split at outside back seam with the hinge held on by one stitch. Bumped corners. Dark tanning and foxing to pages. A leaf or flower was pressed into the back of the book and has left its imprint on the last several blank pages. Penciled price notes on inside cover and fep. Number penciled at top of Preface page. This was the Family Bible of Ann and Thomas Flint Field Cheesemonger of Fielden Bedfordshire parishioners of Christ Church Newgate. The two-page handwritten account on front endpaper of Volume I gives birth death and baptism dates for all 10 children. The fourth son WILLIAM VENTRIS FIELD born August 21 1813 had a long and distinguished career in law and tried many important cases. In 1890 he became a member of Privy Council and was created a peer BARON FIELD OF BAKEHAM. Other internet references refer to mother and daughter of same name as Ann. Mother Ann was killed in a buggy upset in 1833. Father Thomas died in 1861. All three volumes are sound and clean. Volumes II and III appear to be original with marbled edges and minor surface wear. Volume III has a water stain on rear cover. Volume II has a cracked front hingeand two small cover scuffs but is holding together well. Last leaf of Volume III is nearly separated at the gutter. Volume I is a little brighter and varies slightly in gilt border designand with all edges gilt showing that it has been rebound. J. Robins Southwark is the original binder with his labels in the last two volumes. Each volume weighs 10 pounds or 4.5 K. Marbled endpapers. Scores of pages of history definitions and other helps precede the Biblical text which is in large letters in double columns for easy readng. NOTE: The handwritten account lists William as the fourth son which conflicts with the Wikipedia internet listing which was taken from Encyclopaedia Britannica 1911 Volume 10 Which we have sold separately. Particularly gruesome plates throughout depicting the martyrs ends. Incorrect spelling of John Foxe. Contemporary binding half bound in red morocco with marbled boards. Spine is rubbed and worn at the ends with a small split at the top corners are bumped and nicked and the leading edges are worn. On offer is an original typed letter signed TLS dated The Society for Ethical Culture NY April 14 1886 1-1/2 pages by Felix Adler 1851-1933 Jewish rationalist intellectual popular lecturer religious leader and social reformer who founded the Ethical Culture movement. Although not mentioned by name this was written to Douglas Volk the American artist noted for his famous portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was used for the postage stamp. Also of note this letter comes on the heels of Volk's founding of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art Minnesota now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and served as its director until 1893. Adler writes: "My Dear Friend: I must send you a few lines even if they be brief and printed in the stiff letters of the typewriter which you must excuse. I want to tell you simply how dear your kind words are to me and how I treasure and shall always treasure your precious friendship. I am glad to learn that your first days in Minneapolis have been spent in bright sunshine and I trust it may be a favorable augury for the near and distant future. You have indeed a great work before you and it must cheer and inspire you to feel that you are to plant your great and holy art in virgin and fruitful soil. I shall follow your progress with constant and undeviating sympathy you may be sure and I trust you will not fail to keep me informed even of every little thing that occurs in your life of every little sign of progress and of every disappointment for these too of course will not be wanting. With kindest and sincerest good-wishes from all of us to all of you and especially to you your friend Felix Adler." BIO NOTES: At the age of twenty-four Adler founded the New York Society for Ethical Culture in 1876. His sermon on May 15 1876 is considered to be the date on which the religion he called Ethical Culture was established. His lectures before this society on Sundays in New York were well known and attended and were routinely reported on in the New York Times. Adler's belief in deed rather than creed led his society to foster two innovative projects. In 1877 the NYSEC sponsored Visiting Nursing where nurses and doctors if necessary visited the homebound sick in poor districts. This service was eventually incorporated into the New York City health system. A year later in 1878 a Free Kindergarten was established as a tuition-free school for working people's children. It evolved over time into the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. In 1902 Adler was given the chair of political and social ethics at Columbia University which he held until his death in 1933. 18074567Mexico City 1807. Very good. Letterpress broadside illustrated with large engraving 12 x 8.25 inches. Minor wear and foxing engraving printed slightly off register. An evocative and rare Mexican broadside relating the story of Italian Jesuit Francesco de Geronimo 1642-1716. The portrait was executed by Francisco Gordillo also the chief assayer of the Mexico City mint. This broadside was produced the year following Francesco's beatification in 1806; he was later canonized as a saint in 1839. This "Very Light Sketch of the Life of Francisco" includes a biographical history of Geronimo as well as a physical description and information on his beatification and burial. "St. Francis wanted to be sent to preach in the Far East but the Jesuit authorities wanted him to stay in Naples which was the centre of his apostolic labours. He worked through the 'Oratorio delle Missioni' an organization of working men which functioned as a sickness benefit and funeral society. His preaching was famous: sometimes he would bring a skull to the pulpit at others scourge his bare shoulders with an iron chain until they bled. He established hostels for reformed prostitutes and their children. His beatification postponed by the suppression of the Jesuit order finally took place in 1806 and his canonisation in 1839" - New Catholic Encyclopedia. Head of spine rubbed scattered scuffing to boards minor edge wear. Light even tanning and scattered faint foxing. A scarce breviary for the liturgical readings and offices to be performed on Catholic feast days across the calendar year printed in Mexico in 1816. The title indicates that included here are the rites as they are performed in Spain and that the present work contains revisions and additions recently mandated by the Pope. The printing is accomplished attractively in two columns with interesting ornaments and drop capitals used throughout and is housed in plain but well preserved contemporary calf binding. The title page bears an engraving of the Virgin of Guadalupe printed in red. We locate six copies of this text in OCLC of which only two are in U.S. institutions at Columbia and Texas A&M.
