19470008116Jerusalem Israel British Mandated Palestine. Good. 1947. On offer is a unique historically significant journal handwritten during the final days of British Mandated Palestine most entries made immediately prior to the Declaration of Independence. This is a one-year page a day journal for the Jewish year of 5708 September 1947 to October 1948 has about 50 entries with most entries made between September 1947 and December 1947 and few brief records scattered over the next few months - the last one is dated June 7. It measures 7' by 5' the hardcover is slightly soiled but otherwise the journal is in very good condition. The text is in Hebrew the handwriting is mostly legible. Author's name is not identified but there is a note on the front page: "Vaad Hakehilla. Hanala Klalit" Local Community Council. General Management. It is clear from this note and from the context that the journal was kept by a member of the Hebrew Community Council in Jerusalem the body that was established in 1917 and coordinated and represented different groups of Jerusalem Jews during the British Mandate. Vaad Hakehila was responsible for different aspects of Jewish life in the city including economic and social assistance to the residents. It had a social services department and a society of assistance to kindergartens issues related to them are mentioned in the journal several times. Most entries are the minutes of the Council meetings. Some entries deal with organizational and financial matters taxes elections complaints dispute settlement work of social services purchase of fire engines but most meetings reflect increasingly tense situation in the city and concern food and fuel supply food rationing security and organizing Mishmar ha'am National Guard - unit of volunteers established in September 1947 in Jerusalem for maintenance of public order. The Council was constantly in contact with the state authorities political and religious leaders various Jewish organizations trying to solve various problems facing Jewish community in the city. Among the names mentioned in the journal are Yitzhak Ben-Zvi David-Zvi Pinkas a Zionist activist politician a signatory of the Declaration of independence and a future minister Mordechai Shatner a signatory of the Declaration activist and politician one of the founders of Yad Va-Shem who then was a member of the Jewish National Council Ben-Zion Meir Hai Uziel the Sephardi chief rabbi of Mandatory Palestine who appeared before the Mandatory government as representatives of the Jewish community and on missions on its behalf Itzhak HaLevi Herzog the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland and then the Ashkenazi Chief Rabbi of Mandatory Palestine and of Israel Menashe Elassar a noted Jerusalem businessman and many other. The first entry is dated September 15 and mentions a meeting with Mr. Ben-Zvi who had been the President and a member of the Vaad Haleumi the National Council a post in which he served as the chief representative of the Jewish community vis-a-vis the mandatory authorities. His name is mentioned several times throughout the journal in relation to various matters. A council meeting on September 17 dealt with several issues including social work and house confiscation order of the Babayoff family: "Military Commander refused a request to postpone confiscation order for the Babayoff's House till after the holidays . Chief Rabbi Uziel was asked to speak with the commissioner about postponement of the confiscation order. Rabbi Herzog was also asked to speak with the Military Commander regarding the same matter". Many entries mention searches conducted by the British Army in Jewish neighbourhoods one of such searches on Yom Kippur Eve finished with desecration of a synagogue: "Search in Nachlat Zvi Jerusalem neighbourhood. After we received information regarding the desecration of the synagogue by the army during their search R' Nattan and I went to check if the information was correct. We reached the location after the search had finished and the army left the place. All the synagogue benches the tables chairs and pillows were upside down. All of the study books Mishnayot Zohar Gemaras were scattered on the floor. The holy ark was open and the Torah scrolls were open ." Some of the entries refer to property damage caused by bombings that the council members were assessing: "After the two nights that passed in Jerusalem Shabbat night and Motzei Shabbat when tens of thousands of bullets were shot towards the all the Jewish areas of the city I got up early . to visit the places that were the primary targets of the bullets of the police and soldiers. The primary target was again the homes near the police dormitory in the hospital of the English Mission. The view of the horrifying sight of the destruction caused to these homes and the miracle that nobody's life was taken . testimonies were collected from dozens of people."Nov. 16. One of the constant subjects was ensuring food and fuel supply in the city: "Meeting of the supply committee with bakery owners to ensure sufficient flour supply in case of emergency" ".To bring all wholesalers and demand from them to increase supplies in Jerusalem." they meet with members of the Jewish National Council JNC and devote many meetings to this matter. As part of their activity they meet with mukhtars heads of Arabic neighbourhoods. Va'ad had limited means to cope with the worsening situation and in December the Jerusalem Emergency Committee was set up that took upon itself civil administration of Jewish Jerusalem which explains why there are almost no entries after November. Though it includes only about 50 entries of varying length the journal provides a lot of details from the months preceding the Declaration of Independence and contains names of many people who played an important role in creation of the Israeli State. Overall it's a fascinating document of the life of Jewish community in Jerusalem during the last months of the British Mandate and activity of the Jewish Community Council in Jerusalem.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF 20TH CENTURY 1940s POST-WW2 ERA MIDDLE EAST ISRAEL JERUSALEM JEWISH QUARTER CREATION OF ISRAEL JEWS OF JERUSALEM BRITISH MANDATE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE MANDATORY PALESTINE BATTLE OF JERUSALEM 1947 BOMBINGS IN JERUSALEM JEWISH SELF-GOVERNING BODIES IN MANDATORY PALESTINE MISHMAR HA'AM NATIONAL GUARD IN JERUSALEM LOCAL COMMUNITY COUNCIL IN JERUSALEM VA'AD HAKEHILA VAAD HAKEHILA JERUSALEM LOCAL AUTHORITIES LEADERS OF JEWISH COMMUNITY OLD CITY PARTITION BRITISH ARMY IN MANDATORY PALESTINE SOCIAL SERVICES DURING THE BRITISH MANDATE ISRAEL BEFORE INDEPENDENCE SELF-GOVERNMENT OF JEWS IN JERUSALEM JEWISH COOPERATION WITH BRITISH ADMINISTRATION IN PALESTINE YITZHAK BEN-ZVI DAVID-ZVI PINKAS MORDECHAI SHATNER END OF THE BRITISH MANDATE FOOD RATIONING IN JERUSALEM FOOD SUPPLY TO JERUSALEM ZIONISM ZIONIST ACTIVISTS JEWISH NATIONAL COUNCIL JNC VAAD HALEUMI 1947 JERUSALEM RIOTS JERUSALEM RELIGIOUS LEADERS HEBRAICA JEWISH HISTORY HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . hardcover

1555000865Dégagnac France Lot. Very Good. 1555. On offer is a fascinating handwritten medieval French manuscript book earliest date 1555 with entries through 1597 in original blindstamped calf with small Fleur-de-lis. This stunning book has approximately 300 pages of handwritten entries being a register of acts properties transactions loans personal notes and journal entries the majority concerning Marc-Antoine Hébrart a noted merchant in the village of Dégagnac in Lot in south-western France. Most certainly Jewish it is evident that the Hebrart family was one of the largest land-holding families in the area. "In 1504 and 1505 the two "headmen" of the village Antoine Hebrart and Pierre Peysson together accounted for 15 percent of the land of the village" Ref: By Le Roy Emmanuel and Ladurie John Day The Peasants of Languedoc . A pencil annotation indicates that Marc Hébrard was of Jewish origin. A fairly cursory examination of the manuscript lends no additional support to this assertion but it is possible given the history of the Jews of neighboring Languedoc and the fact that some Jews remained in France under Christian-like assumed names after their expulsion in 1306. The generic 'Marc-Antoine' is cited as a Jewish name in Sara Uckelman's "Jewish Given Names Found in "Les Noms Des Israélites en France." First Edition in English. 189 x 134 mm. 7 3/8 x 5 1/4". 4 87 1 leaves with foliation errors but complete.Translated from the Latin by Thomas Twyne. <br/> Retrospective half pigskin over marbled boards raised bands red morocco label. Title with woodcut ornament head- and tailpieces many decorative initials. Printed in black letter. Front pastedown with Macclesfield bookplate for the South library; title with inscription in ink "Dulcius ex ipso fonte bibuntur aquae" "Sweetly the waters have been drunk from the fountain itself" and with the initials "D. Fl." see below; a couple of contemporary annotations in ink one slightly shaved; numerous marginal readers' marks in ink and pencil. STC 6231; ESTC S105155. Paper a shade or two less than bright title somewhat soiled a dark stain affecting the upper corner of ff. 24-28 touching text but all is legible; still an overall very good clean copy in a pleasing new binding.<br/> <br/> This is the first appearance in English of Daneau's 1576 "Physica Christiana" the foundational work of "Mosaic physics" which attempted to reconcile the account of creation in Genesis with scientific knowledge of the natural world in order to create a "Christian natural philosophy." Though obviously theological in origin "Christian Physics" is nevertheless substantially a work of natural history generally adopting the Aristotelian worldview then prevalent. The first of two parts is a disquisition on creation a long Socratic dialogue on the meaning of the opening chapters of Genesis. The second part which occupies a good deal more than two-thirds of the volume is a broader treatise on nature including discussion of such things as light and shadow meteors the rainbow thunder precious stones glass gold various trees stars and planets fish birds elephants foxes and many more topics. A Calvinist theologian forced into itinerancy because of his incautiously expressed opinions Daneau 1530-95 produced a considerable number of books mostly commentaries on the Bible and controversial works written against Lutherans and Catholics alike. Our copy has a couple of curious contemporary marginal annotations. On the verso of fo. 2 at the beginning of the second chapter someone noted "Five / speciall / copies of na- / turall phi- / losophye." And at the head of fo. 39 mis-numbered 40 recto is the inscription "Sr. Walter Rawley Laureatus poeta May 4 anno reg. Eliz. 39 anno dom. 1598." There is nothing in Raleigh's biography that can account for his being mentioned as poet laureate in 1598; in that period he was occupied in naval pursuits against the Spanish armada. It has been suggested that our copy was once owned by scholar and translator Andrew Hartwell 1553-1606 a bibliophile who sometimes used the Latin motto which appears on the title page here and who marked passages in his books with the floret-like squiggle seen here on ff. 3-12. At the same time the "D. Fl." inscription on the title page resembles the ownership mark used by the celebrated 17th century bibliophile antiquary politician and magistrate Sir Daniel Fleming 1633-1701. Later the book was securely located in the great library of the earls of Macclesfield which was sold in 12 sales at Sotheby's from 16 March 2004 to 2 October 2008 for some £22 million at the time approximately $40 million. The library was dispersed when the 9th Earl Macclesfield Richard Timothy George Mansfield Parker b. 1943 who was described by the "Independent" as leading an "unconventional lifestyle" was forced to leave his 14th century Shirburn Castle after a protracted family dispute. Called by the paper "a sleeping beauty" his crenellated home had a moat a drawbridge and at the time of the Earl's departure a repair bill of approximately £2.6 million. Despite the building's dilapidation the books in the very large library were distinguished for being uniformly well preserved were almost always in their original bindings and were a sensation at auction for more than four years. The present work is rare: ABPC and RBH locate just one other copy at auction in the past 40 years. [Printed by John Kingston] for Andrew Maunsell unknown

19190008194DAMASCUS PRE SYRIA POST OTTOMAN EMPIRE. Fair. 1919. On offer is a powerful poignant letter written by an early Zionist and volunteer of the Jewish Legion in Damascus immediately after the end of WW1. The letter contains 2 double-sided sheets measuring 9' x 5.8' and an envelope measuring 5.9' x 4.9'. The envelope has no inscriptions or stamps except a round sticker with bookseller's name - "Coles" the sheets are yellowed and torn in half at folds but it does not affect the text which is perfectly legible. The letter is written in Hebrew addressed to Shimon and signed by Shlomo Solomon. It seems from the context that they are very close friends. The first page bears the date and place: Damascus August 20 1919. It is also clear that the author was a Dutch Jew who had lived in Eretz Israel for some time before joining the military. Based on the date when he joined the army summer 1918 and other context it can be said with high level of certainty that he was a member of the Jewish Legion. The Jewish Legion was the name of 39th through 42nd Battalions of the Royal Fusiliers in the British Army that were formed of Jewish volunteers. The formation of a Jewish Regiment was initiative of Zeev Jabotinsky and Joseph Trumpeldor promoted by John Henry Patterson. Among its members were also David Ben-Gurion Dov Hoz Yitzhak Ben-Zvi Yakov Drori Levi Eshkol and other famous Zionist leaders many later became members of Haganah and laid the foundation of the Israel Defence Army. The initial unit Zion Mule Corps was formed in 1914 - 1915 in August 1917 formation of a Jewish regiment was officially announced in spring and summer 1918 volunteers from Palestine joined 39th and 40th Battalions and started service. That's exactly when the author volunteered: "My Dear Shimon some time ago I received your last letter probably the first one that you wrote to me in Hebrew and now I have a little more time and will answer to you when I am calm also in Hebrew - now I have been a soldier for over a year but what we hoped for when we volunteered for the Army was not realized.". There is something deeply moving in this letter full of thoughts about the future of Israel: "Until there is Jewish Army in the full sense of the word probably a long time must pass. This moment has not come yet. Unfortunately that's what we feel deep in our hearts. But anyway these times have been times of very important and interesting experiments and in this sense this time --- has not been lost" p.1; ".it is not possible yet to breathe freely much is still missing we can only hope that soon . the way out of the darkness the uncertainty where we are now will become clear that it will be possible to start large great fruitful work the giant work requiring all our spiritual and physical efforts without a second thought of each and each of us . to achieve our supreme goal our people living in the Land of Israel - happy people in fertile land" p.2. He has acute interest in current affairs of the Zionist movement writing about the convention of the Va'ad HaPoel HaZioni The Action Committee that was convening in London in the last week of August. The purpose of the congress was to work out principles of the Zionist movement in the era after the WW1 and the Balfour Declaration: ".Only when all great difficulties will be defeated when the situation is settled. This is our heart hope! . the convention that will be now in London will contribute to clearing up the situation. Is this convention a sort of a congress of representatives from all countries also from Germany and Austria Otherwise it is not a general convention and it will not have any authority to make declarations in the name of all Zionism". He is particularly interested in developments in Zionist movement in Holland mentioning names of some noted Dutch Zionists. He writes about his mood and frustrations from the army service and mentions his family: "I want for once to live like a human being because life in the army is not life at the end. ---. I have been sent to work at different army offices and now I am in Damascus. It is interesting to see some of the world this way but that is not what I have volunteered to the Hebrew army for. But what to do ----. And I do not think that I will be able to get back to life until the next summer. I also wanted to go and see the mother and everyone and breathe a little different air after a while." He asks Shimon about his plans to come: "What do you think about coming to Israel And what do they think about your preparations . I have not seen any Dutch that came to Israel so far. Neither De Haan nor Van Friesland nor . I hope now to be near Jaffa and Jerusalem. What about the other that you wrote would come here". De Haan was a Dutch Jewish writer and journalist who became interested in Judaism and Zionism he actually moved to Israel the same year later became close with Orthodox community and get into conflict with secular Zionists 5 years later he was killed by Haganah members for his anti-Zionist activity. In the letter Shlomo also asks about his letters published by Handelsblad the most important daily newspaper in Holland. This letter is an amazing historical document reflecting aspirations and frustrations of early Zionists and their mood and concerns in the wake of the First World War and Balfour Declaration.; Manuscript; 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; EARLY 20TH CENTURY; 1910S; WW1; FIRST WORLD WAR; GREAT WAR; MANDATORY PALESTINE; SYRIA; DAMASCUS; OCCUPIED ENEMY TERRITORY ADMINISTRATION ARAB KINGDOM OF SYRIA FRENCH MANDATE STATE OF ALEPPO STATE OF DAMASCUS STATE OF SYRIA ALAWITE STATE JABAL AL-DRUZE JEWS IN THE BRITISH ARMY; JEWISH VOLUNTEERS IN THE WW1; ZIONISM; EARLY ZIONISTS; ROYAL FUSILIERS; JEWS AND THE MILITARY; WARS; ERETZ ISRAEL; YISHUV; OCCUPIED ENEMY TERRITORY ADMINISTRATION OETA; OETA SOUTH; BATTALIONS 39TH- 42ND OF THE ROYAL FUSILIERS; JEWISH REGIMENT IN THE BRITISH ARMY IN WW1; PALESTINIAN JEWS; IDEOLOGY OF ZIONISM; FIRST JUDEANS; THE ACTIONS COMMITTEE; VA'AD HAPOEL HAZIONI 1919 CONGRESS; DUTCH JEWRY AND ZIONISM; JACOB ISRAEL DE HAAN; ZIONIST MOVEMENT AFTER WW1; HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown
17935161Guadalaxara: En la Imprenta de Don Mariano Valdes Tellez Giron 1793. About very good. 6xxviii2492pp. Small quarto. Original plain wrappers stitched as issued. Light dampstaining to wrappers slightly affecting gutter margin of outer text leaves. Some worming primarily in the gutter but affecting a few words of text. The first production of the first press in Guadalajara the fourth city in Mexico to have a printing press. The work commemorates the funeral obsequies of Fray Antonio Alcalde Barriga the Dominican Bishop of Guadalajara. Alcalde was a prominent preacher and minister in Spain for three decades until King Charles III sent him to Mexico in 1763; he became the Bishop of Guadalajara in 1771 and served in that capacity until his death in 1792. Following his arrival in the city he helped to establish the Hospital San Miguel and the Universidad de Guadalajara and dedicated much of his time and resources to the construction and restoration of churches and schools in the diocese. This book begins with a Latin eulogy given by José Apolonari de Vizcarra the rector of the seminary in Guadalajara who had been ordained and appointed by Alcalde. The second major component of this work is the Spanish-language sermon that was pronounced at the funeral by Juan José Moreno y Pizano the canon of the city cathedral and another Alcalde appointment. The final section is composed of copies of documents illustrative of the generosity and goodness that characterized the bishop's life including several decrees and a long detailed list of his gifts to various monasteries convents and schools. The volume ends with a sizable indeed somewhat embarrassing list of errata for the eulogy and sermon.<br /> <br /> The first printer of Guadalajara and the publisher of the present work was Mariano Valdés Tellez Giron. Sometime before 1792 city authorities and well-places private individuals in Guadalajara began to solicit among the printers of Mexico City to attract one of them to their growing metropolis. At first there were no takers but eventually Manuel Antonio Valdés the editor of the Gazeta de México accepted their offer and guarantees and sent his son Mariano to fill the position. The father ordered new type and equipment from Spain and all of the necessary permissions for establishing the first press of Guadalajara were in place by February 1792 but Valdés Tellez Giron did not arrive until the beginning of the next year. As with all first presses the available work was less than promised or envisioned but Valdés persisted and probably did much more job printing than book and broadside work. His presswork is characterized by neatness and good page design.<br /> <br /> "The first book printed in Guadalajara. Considerable biographical information of the Bishop and details of his Mexican achievements are given by Father Juan Joseph Moreno in this the funeral sermon for the Bishop" - Nebenzahl. The importance and scarcity of this work are underscored by its facsimile reproduction in a limited edition of fifty copies in 1982. No examples appear in available U.S. sales records since a 1988 Swann auction.<br /> Beristain I p.303. Medina Guadalajara 1. Palau 79207. Nebenzahl 4:61. Sabin 29025 & 22362. 1921List2036Mt. Pleasant 1921. Limp leatherette journal measuring 6 ½ x 4 inches 170 pages. Some chips to spine fine contents. Near Fine. Christian N. Lund was born in Norway in 1846 to Mormon parents and immigrated to the United States in 1869 first arriving in Salt Lake City and eventually settling in Mt. Pleasant Utah. He was a member of the Constitutional Conventions held in 1882 and 1887 in Salt Lake City a member of the Legislature in the House in 1890 and City Council in 1894 and was appointed bishop in 1890. He did missionary work in the Pacific Northwest in the 1870s and in Scandinavia in the 1890s presiding over missions in Norway Sweden and Denmark. He served as bishop of the two Mt. Pleasant wards during a period when they were the largest wards in the church. He died in 1921. <br /> <br /> Offered here is a journal Lund kept as an alphabetical index to religious ideas with additional ruminations and philosophical musings included intended possibly as a keepsake for a family member as it was passed on to one of his grandsons following his death per an inscription inside. The entries track themes such as “Astronomy†and “The Jews†through the Old and New Testaments and Book of Mormon and are intended to weave the sources together into a single resource on religious themes. The facts that Lund highlights range are interesting and as a group the entries would be of interest to scholars of Mormon thought during the period. It is also interesting which other subjects Lund chooses to write about such as transcribing verbatim an article written about the transatlantic cable in 1921 just months before his death. In another section he lists per capita consumption of “Intoxicating Liquors†comparing it to other vices such as tobacco jewelry patent medicine and chewing bum. One page ranks the ways in which the Church of Latter Day Saints differs from other churches. Some of the lists refer to LDs-related subjects using the prefix “FOL†which raises the possibility that the volume served as his own reference for works held at the LDS archive that he had researched. <br /> <br /> Overall the volume gives an interesting synthesis of contemporary secular and religious themed entries with Lind’s interest in statistics and numbers permeating the volume and providing information on his personal philosophy. It would complement Nielsen’s autobiography and journals for scholars interested in his life and thought. unknown
338<p>A very rare model of a cross-shaped or cruciform sundial unsigned but German dating back to the early 19th century.</p><p>Cruciform models have existed since at least the first half of the 16th century. They were used for ecclesiastical purposes as highlighted here by the moto taken from Psalm 150 and inscribed below the cross: "Ominis spiritus Laudet dominum" Everything that breathes praises the Lord.</p><p>The instrument consists of two dials:</p><p>– A horizontal dial on the brass plate incorporating a compass and inscribed with two hour scales for latitudes 40 and 50 degrees north divided into 4-12 and 1-8. The axis-wire is adjusted using the latitude scale inscribed on the cross.</p><p>– A crucifix or cruciform dial whose setting is achieved by tilting the cross along the quadrant mounted on the plate and divided into 0 to 90 degrees. The hour scales are engraved on the arms and along the cross which also serve as a gnomon.</p><p>A very rare model of sundial that combines religious practice and time measurement.</p><p>While watches and clocks were already widely available at the dawn of the 19th century the construction of such a cruciform dial necessarily carried a strong symbolic meaning recalling the Christian motif of the Memento Mori "Remember that you will die."</p><p>The plate measures 10 x 7.5 cm and the dial is approximately 10.3 cm high.</p><p>Aside from its rarity this dial has a particularly interesting provenance as it was exhibited in 1984 at the famous Brussels exhibition "La mesure du temps" see the photos of the catalog page 101 issue 112.</p>

Anicius Manlius Boethius 480-524 was a late Roman philosopher and statesman. He became embroiled in a plot against Theodoric the Ostrogothic ruler of Rome and was eventually executed. Boethius wrote his most famous work the "Consolation of Philosophy" while awaiting his fate in prison. The five sections discuss the capriciousness of fortune the influence of good and evil and the nature of God's control over the universe i.e. free will providence and fate. The work employs the Platonic notion of an ascent of the soul to the Godhead through a process of contemplation and reflection. The imagery is predominately pagan; however the author himself was strongly influenced by Christian thought. Boethius's work was immensely influential throughout the middle ages. Commentaries are provided by Josse Badius 1462-1535 and Thomas Wallensis the latter wrongly ascribed to Thomas Aquinas. The "Ascensio explanato" has separate signatures and divisional title page. 195212849Various locations in North Texas mainly Greenville 1952. Eighteen manuscript diaries one daily entry per page all mostly filled in totaling approximately 5800pp. and about 575000 words with numerous ephemeral items laid in. All in matching black blue or crimson cloth with gilt titles on front cover reading "DIARY" and with the given year. with: Collection of Fourteen Manuscript Diaries from Hilger's Wife Mary Ollie Haynes Hilger. A deeply-informative collection of personal diaries kept by Rev. John Rufus Hilger a Baptist preacher and piano repair man based in Greenville Texas during the first half of the 20th century. John Rufus Hilger 1884-1952 was born and raised in Boone Arkansas but is noted as early as 1910 from census records as a "Minister" in Collin County Texas. Hilger married Mary Ollie Hayes in Collin County in 1901 and the couple raised four children. Reverend Hilger passed away in Greenville on January 7 1953 and is buried in Farmersville Texas. According to his obituary in the McKinney Courier Gazette Reverend Hilger "was a Baptist preacher for 42 years and was well known throughout Collin and Hunt counties."<br /> <br /> Reverend Hilger was a obsessive diarist recording his life and work almost every day in the eighteen annual diaries present here. The diaries necessarily detail a multitude of both personal and professional topics and activities over this time. A quick survey of personal activities recorded here include having dinner with various friends and congregants; noting visits by children family and friends; recording his finances and purchases often with lists of prices of various goods; gardening taking care of his livestock and keeping bees; mentioning election dates and commenting on current events "The Civil War in Spain is still raging. It started last September" February 23 1937; remarking when he works on a piano; and so much more. Interestingly the whole of his November 23 1936 entry records his family trip to Dallas to attend the Texas Centennial Exposition where he comments on seeing the "old relics" "old documents" and "new inventions." His entry for December 7 1941 is headed "WAR BEGAN" in bold capital letters. One part of his entry for May 8 1945 headed "V-E Day German surrendered" reads: "The war is ended in Europe but is still going on with Japan. Great celebrations went on all day by the Allies."<br /> <br /> Hilger's professional tasks include a legion of sermons throughout the years performed all across North Texas Hilger usually includes the titles of such sermons along with other details i.e. "Preached at 11: 'Missions.' Took collection for Home and Foreign Missions received $17.55"; conducting funerals at home and in other areas around the area; attending Baptist conferences and meetings around the state; teaching classes at Baptist schools; and more. A healthy number of ephemeral items are laid in throughout the diaries likely picked up by Hilger during the course of his work. Among these items are commercial cards receipts a piece of V-Mail sent home by Hilger's nephew from France in January 1945 a political campaign card for the local sheriff and a business card for a cobbler known as "The Crippled Shoemaker" in Paris Texas. Reverend Hilger's diaries last throughout the year before his death with his last entry dated in early February 1952.<br /> <br /> Greenville Texas was a notoriously racist town in north Texas. Once a center for the booming cotton industry officials in Greenville employed the typical array of Jim Crown laws to discourage settlement by African Americans in the 20th century. Additionally a welcome sign hung over Lee Street in downtown Greenville from 1921 to 1965 that read "Greenville - The Blackest Land The Whitest People." Reverend Hilger's views on race are hopefully more positive. The only mention we saw of African Americans in perusing the diaries is a line in his March 22 1945 entry: "Went to see the Negro about ploughing for us."<br /> <br /> Reverend Hilger's diaries are accompanied by fourteen additional manuscript diaries of the same type he used authored by his wife Mary Ollie Hayes Hilger 1882-1964. Mary Hilger was also born in Arkansas and likely accompanied Reverend Hilger to Texas at the turn of the 20th century. These diaries date from various years between 1942 and 1963. Adorably both Reverend Hilger in the above diaries and Mary Ollie in her diaries refer to each other as "Mrs. Hilger" and "Mr. Hilger" respectively. Mrs. Hilger records an understandably wide range of observations and activities over the course of twenty years. In and of themselves the present diaries are an interesting and informative collection of the thoughts and experiences of a Baptist woman in Texas at the midcentury mark. She often mentions visiting her daughter Jester in Fort Worth and other family matters and also occasionally includes observations on topics such as current affairs. In one such entry from November 5 1952 Mary comments on the recent presidential election: "Ike was elected by a large majority - the largest vote cast in the history of our country. Seems as though most of the people are fed up on Trumanism and war. I know I am and have been a long time."<br /> <br /> An extraordinary collection of the seemingly ordinary lives of a Baptist preacher and his wife in Texas over the course of more than twenty-five years seen through both of their eyes for much of the time with deep research potential. unknown
