William Gadsby in the early portion of his 38-year-ministry at the chapel in Manchester. The majority of the works deal with strict Baptist doctrine. Nearly all were printed by Henry and Robert Smith Manchester between 1816 and 1826. Approx. 600 pp. Binding is sound and square showing normal wear to covers. 1886 INTIMATE TYPED LETTER SIGNED TLS BY FAMED JEWISH INTELLECTUAL LECTURER SOCIAL REFORMER AND RELIGIOUS LEADER TO HIS FRIEND NOTED LINCOLN PORTRAIT ARTIST DOUGLAS VOLK

On offer is an original typed letter signed TLS dated The Society for Ethical Culture NY April 14 1886 1-1/2 pages by Felix Adler 1851-1933 Jewish rationalist intellectual popular lecturer religious leader and social reformer who founded the Ethical Culture movement. Although not mentioned by name this was written to Douglas Volk the American artist noted for his famous portrait of Abraham Lincoln that was used for the postage stamp. Also of note this letter comes on the heels of Volk's founding of the Minneapolis School of Fine Art Minnesota now the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and served as its director until 1893. Adler writes: "My Dear Friend: I must send you a few lines even if they be brief and printed in the stiff letters of the typewriter which you must excuse. I want to tell you simply how dear your kind words are to me and how I treasure and shall always treasure your precious friendship. I am glad to learn that your first days in Minneapolis have been spent in bright sunshine and I trust it may be a favorable augury for the near and distant future. You have indeed a great work before you and it must cheer and inspire you to feel that you are to plant your great and holy art in virgin and fruitful soil. I shall follow your progress with constant and undeviating sympathy you may be sure and I trust you will not fail to keep me informed even of every little thing that occurs in your life of every little sign of progress and of every disappointment for these too of course will not be wanting. With kindest and sincerest good-wishes from all of us to all of you and especially to you your friend Felix Adler." BIO NOTES: At the age of twenty-four Adler founded the New York Society for Ethical Culture in 1876. His sermon on May 15 1876 is considered to be the date on which the religion he called Ethical Culture was established. His lectures before this society on Sundays in New York were well known and attended and were routinely reported on in the New York Times. Adler's belief in deed rather than creed led his society to foster two innovative projects. In 1877 the NYSEC sponsored Visiting Nursing where nurses and doctors if necessary visited the homebound sick in poor districts. This service was eventually incorporated into the New York City health system. A year later in 1878 a Free Kindergarten was established as a tuition-free school for working people's children. It evolved over time into the Ethical Culture Fieldston School. In 1902 Adler was given the chair of political and social ethics at Columbia University which he held until his death in 1933. 1829 Handwritten Manuscript Letter from Virginia Bank Cashier to a Prominent New York Merchant Regarding Debts of His Bankrupt Former Business Partner

On offer is a letter written by a cashier at the Farmers Bank of Virginia to a well-off client regarding the debt consolidation of a former business associate who declared bankruptcy. The letter dated April 10 1829 is written and signed by William Nekervis cashier for the Farmers Bank of Virginia. Nekervis was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania date unknown and prior to becoming a bookkeeper and then cashier in Virginia it is believed that he is the same William Nekervis who was a co-founder of the Philadelphia Society for the Instruction of Indigent Boys which became the Philadelphia Society for the Establishment and Support of Charity Schools. Nekervis died in Virginia in August 1837. In this letter Nekervis writes in his role as cashier of the Farmers Bank of Virginia to Tobias Isaac Tobias 1786-1861 a merchant based in New York City. He writes: .Since I last wrote to you two of Mr. Judah's notes have been consolidated and reduced to $240. The debt is now $455 in two notes $240 and $215 both due 27/30 April. We believe that Nekervis is writing about Mr. David Judah 1789-1866. On June 23 1823 Virginia newspapers reported that David Judah Tobias Isaac Tobias and Edward Pollock had become business partners in David Judah & Company a Virginia-based dry goods company. Less than five years later New York newspapers reported that on February 4 1828 T. I. Tobias & Co. Of New York legally separated from Virginias David Judah & Co by "mutual consent". It is clear that following the dissolution of his company Judah was in financial distress. In March of 1829 Judah sold off all of his possessions including his home and its contents his four female slaves one of whom was a nine-year-old and over 184 acres of land. The Kaplan Collection which holds some of Tobias' and Judah's correspondence reports that following his financial collapse Judah moved to Maryland. The letter offered here was written only months after a January 1829 letter held in the Kaplan Collection in which Nekervis responded to Tobias' question about Judahs outstanding debts owed to the bank. This letter adds to the knowledge of 19th century Jewish-American merchants and the burgeoning banking industry that funded their business ventures in the Jeffersonian-era. This letter is one page integral stampless address leaf and measures 8 x 10 inches. Very light dust soiling and toning. A rare broadsheet presenting the efforts and goals of the Bishop of Nancy to Mexican Catholics regarding his urgent requirement to rescue infidel children from China and other "idolater" countries. The sheet presents the suffering and needs of the innocents going into great detail on the supposed barbaric practices of China describing the many ways unchristian people kill children such as drowning them in buckets of hot water feeding them to dogs or pigs and throwing them into rivers tied to pumpkins. The document begins: "Arrebatar de las garras de la muerte un sin nÃºmero de criaturas hijos de padres infieles que el capricho y la miseria la supersticiÃ³n y la mÃ¡s horrible y desnaturalizada barbarie hace morir a centenares y a millares arrojados a los rios y en el mar y aÃºn comidos por perros y cerdos.El Obispo desea ante todas cosas abrir al mayor nÃºmero posible de estos seres infelices desheredados en su nacimiento del afecto paternal las puertas del cielo por el bautismo; y tambiÃ©n preparar un medio seguro y poderoso para regenerar las naciones idolatras dando una educaciÃ³n cristiana a los niÃ±os y niÃ±as libertados de la muerte y hacer de ellos con el tiempo instrumentos de salvaciÃ³n como maestros mÃ©dicos presbÃteros y aÃºn misioneros indigenas." The broadsheet goes on to announce the formation of a Catholic organization to aid these poor souls headquartered in northeastern France and to appeal in florid language to the devout citizens of Mexico for their generous contributions to the cause. The verso also prints extracts of the regulations for this main organization at Nancy and it includes the names of the central council in France and the Mexican principals in charge of collecting money for the cause. OCLC locates only one copy of an 1852 French printing of a similar appeal but no copies of a Mexican imprint. A highly unusual and scarce Mexican broadsheet. Imprenta de M.
