Bound in 19th century marbled boards rubbed. Re-backed in black morocco with older gilt lettered spine laid on. Bookplate depicting a baron's crown on inside front cover. Sticker removed from front end paper. Booklet is trimmed on the bottom obscuring the lower printed border line on the title page but not affecting any text. Plenty of space remains in the margins of the text pages. 40 sheets of 19th century blank paper are bound in the rear. Top edge gilt. The author is actually Henry Keepe writing under the pseudonym of Charles Taylour. His booklet addressed to King James II describes how he Keepe salvaged the crucifix and gold chain of Edward the Confessor from a damaged tomb at Westminster and how he later presented this treasure to the newly crowned king. The author claims that his discovery of the artifact on June 11 1685 was a "forerunner of the Good News" that James had defeated his enemies presumably the Duke of Monmouth. Keepe then relates three previous occasions when King Edward's body was disinterred. On each occasion the corpse was supposedly found in a miraculously uncorrupted state. These stories stand in some contrast to the author's own experience. Although Keepe stresses that the tomb's artifacts including the gold chain and crucifix correspond to historical accounts he also reveals perhaps inadvertently that the Confessor's body was nothing but bones. Unusual and scarce piece. ESTC locates only 7 copies in the U.S. OCLC lists 5 locations. Marshall showing numerical manifestations of ‘666’ and their supposed connections to the Catholic Church full-page plate and woodcut initials headpieces numerological illustrations and diagrams in the text. Leaf X4 is a cancel; final leaf is blank. Book plate from the North Library of the Earls of Macclesfield and binder's ticket Hatton of Manchester to front paste-down. Nineteenth-century half-calf spine gilt in six compartments red morocco lettering piece gilt brown medium diaper cloth-covered boards all edges speckled red sea-green end papers. Complete in all respects and in excellent condition throughout with clean pages clear print and ample margins. Engraved title is a rich deep impression. A superb example with minor scuffing and fading of boards. Wing P3028. Madan II 1032. A treatise on the Number of the Beast by the English clergyman scientific instrument maker early member of the Royal Society and friend of John Aubrey. According to the ODNB Potter was interested in "connecting 25 the ‘appropinque’ square root of 666 with various institutions in the Roman Catholic church. His ideas were elaborated in a manuscript which was read in 1637 by Joseph Mede and commended as a wonderful discovery the ‘happiest that ever yet came into the world.'" Pepys considered it "mighty ingenious." It continued to be influential and was reprinted as late as 1808. Aubrey’s short life of Potter paints a vivid picture of his character and highly inventive mind. N. B. Endpapers are tastefully renewed with laid paper. The inside front cover displays a remounted 19th century bookplate "The Hope Trust 31 Moray Place Edinburgh". A modern bookbinders ticket is pasted on the inner rear cover. Interior pages show occasional minor wear and ageing but are generally clean. A single word on page 43 is lightly underlined in an early hand; the bottom marginal corner tips on pages 99 and 395 are clipped. Page 533/34 contains a 25 mm. tear - professionally sealed. Bartolomeo Platina 1421-1481 was an Italian scholar. During the pontificate of Pope Paul II 1417-1471 Platina and other humanists were dismissed from their positions in the Roman College. Platina led a protest which ended with his imprisonment and torture. He was eventually exonerated. Later Pope Sixtus IV appointed Platina to be the first prefect of the newly founded Vatican Library. Sixtus also commissioned him to write a history of the popes. According to the "Catholic Encyclopedia" Platinas "De Vitis pontificum" first printed in Venice 1479 "is a work of no small merit for it is the first systematic handbook of papal history." The book contains more than hagiographies. Platina portrays his enemy Paul II as a tyrant and he occasionally records pieces of lore which do not always place the Church in the best light i.e. a brief history of the legendary female pontiff "Pope Joan" can be found under John VIII Ioannes VIII. The Netherlands 1645 edition and the s.l. 1664 edition are both based on the original text of 1479 and on the 1529 edition. Note: another 1664 edition exists with variant pagination. General rubbing wear to corner tips with wear through to boards on the lower two; rear joint rubbed with 1" crack at top; front joint cracked binding remains very tight. Soil to front pastedown; light stain to top one third of title page otherwise very clean text. Pierre de Marca January 24 1594 June 29 1662 was a French bishop and historian born at Gan in Béarn of a family distinguished in the magistracy. Among his numerous publications the most important are: "Histoire de Béarn" folio Paris 1640; "De concordia sacerdotii et imperii seu de libertatibus ecclesiae gallicanae" folio Paris 1641 and other editions; "Marca hispanica seu limes hispanicus" published by Baluze D. Balusii above folio Paris 1688. Some "Lettres inedites de Marca" have been published by Tartizey de Lorroque Paris 1881 and J. Bonnet in the "Revuede Gascogne" January-June 1910. As his secretary Baluze and de Marca's cousin and biographer Paul de Faget seem to have worked to promote and publish his work after his death this would appear to be an early anthology of some of his writings not found recorded in this edition on WorldCat or in any other sources that I can locate at this time though my reach for this material is admittedly short.
