1654032978London: Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard 1654 A good copy in contemporary full pigskin with blind ruled lines to boards. The pages have been cropped so the margins and gutter are quite small and the book is slightly bowed as if it has been held or kept in a pocket for ease of reference. It is certainly an entertaining read. Thomas Hall circa 1610-1665 was a Presbyterian and at the time of publication was Pastor of Kingsnorton. His congregation dismissed him at the Restoration - and if his sermons resembled his writing it is easy to imagine why. A small sample: 'Lastly as no man may weare his owne haire excessively long so he may not weare the long haire of another be it of a man a woman or it may be of some harlot who is now in Hell lamenting there the abuse of that excrement'. The binding is sound with a area of leather loss at the bottom of the spine and light general wear. Contents with title blank verso; poems 5pp; errata 1p; text pp 1-95 blank verso; Appendix title blank verso; text 99-125 Finis; rear blank. Decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals. Paper is clean with toning. The title page is very browned at the edges which are slightly ragged and there is a small pasted piece of paper over one word on last page of poems. There is some mispagination but the text is continuous: 58-56-60; 78-69-80; and 92-39-94. Printed by J G for Nathanael Webb and William Grantham at the signe of the Bear in St Paul's Church-yard hardcover
1688000125London: Printed by J.B. and sold by Randal Taylor 1688. First Edition. . Hardcover. See Description. Small 4to. pp. 6 34. With imprimatur leaf facing the title. Bound in 19th century marbled boards rubbed. Re-backed in black morocco with older gilt lettered spine laid on. Bookplate depicting a baron's crown on inside front cover. Sticker removed from front end paper. Booklet is trimmed on the bottom obscuring the lower printed border line on the title page but not affecting any text. Plenty of space remains in the margins of the text pages. 40 sheets of 19th century blank paper are bound in the rear. Top edge gilt. The author is actually Henry Keepe writing under the pseudonym of Charles Taylour. His booklet addressed to King James II describes how he Keepe salvaged the crucifix and gold chain of Edward the Confessor from a damaged tomb at Westminster and how he later presented this treasure to the newly crowned king. The author claims that his discovery of the artifact on June 11 1685 was a "forerunner of the Good News" that James had defeated his enemies presumably the Duke of Monmouth. Keepe then relates three previous occasions when King Edward's body was disinterred. On each occasion the corpse was supposedly found in a miraculously uncorrupted state. These stories stand in some contrast to the author's own experience. Although Keepe stresses that the tomb's artifacts including the gold chain and crucifix correspond to historical accounts he also reveals perhaps inadvertently that the Confessor's body was nothing but bones. With four engraved plates small octavo t.p. 201326 133-406 2-page publisher's catalogue browning and age-toning with occasional blotching a corner torn from the first blank a worm-hole in the margin of the early pages but only really noticeable on the first eleven pages tight internally original calf rubbed and pocked neatly re-backed with new unlettered leather spine the original endpapers retained. In Rays time understanding of creation was governed by the account in the Bible. It was thought that the earth dated from about 5000BC and that fossils were formed in nature as imitations of shells fish or other creatures but were not a genuine creature. Rays observations of the changing coastlines around Britain and his fossil excavations led him to question both of these. He published his work on Fossils in his Miscellaneous Discourses 1692. The work quickly sold out and a considerably enlarged second edition with a new title was published the next year which is the copy we offer here . In particular he put forward that fossils were the remains of creatures that were now extinct going against the commonly held view that all creatures that God created at the beginning still existed. Second edition. Full Leather. Good. Sam Smith Hardcover
