The chief interest of many of the events recorded in the Bible gathers round its rivers and lakes, and this book attempts to link the explanation of the Scripture with the description of the scenes which are visited. It draws on many sources, namely Robinson's "Researches in Palestine," Lynch's "Narrative of the American Exploring Expedition to the Jordan and the Dead Sea," Stanley's "Sinai and Palestine," and several others. Of particular value are the charming plates, a set of delicate pen-and-ink lithographs known as "Nelson Prints". The image of each plate is first printed from a lithograph stone in a purplish ink. The plate is then coloured in pale blue and fawn from separate relief wood blocks. Not in Tobler, who refers (225) only to Tweedie's earlier work, "Jerusalem and its Environs" (1860).

RARE book containing all four volumes of "A Sentimental Journey", and "A Political Romance". Irish-born English author Laurence Sterne (1713-1768) wrote and first published the "A Sentimental Journey through France and Italy" in 1768 which immediately became extremely popular and helped establish travel writing as one of the dominant genres of the second half of the 18th century. "A Sentimental Journey" ends quite abruptly after its two first volumes, mid-sentence in fact, with the promise of two volumes to follow. This plan was interrupted by Sterne's death. John Hall-Stevenson, a friend of Sterne's, attempted to complete the work. Two volumes containing the continuation were published in 1769 and this rare 1774 edition includes all four volumes. 110x180mm. 328 pages. Seemingly original brown leather Hardcover. They first travelled to Triest, where they embarked on the "Elektra", sailing to Alexandria. From Alexandria, via Cairo and Port Said, they arrived at Jaffa.
