The book is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The leather binding has some lightish bumping and rubbing to the spine ends corners and cover edges. There are tears to the bottom front spine joint approx. 3" and the top rear spine joint approx. 2" that have been repaired. The front and rear covers of the book have embossed decorations with gilt accents and rules to the front cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The Early Christian Monastery of Alahan occupies a terrace high in the mountains of Isauria in southern Asia Minor. Constructed din the second half of the fifth century Its remains include three churches a baptistrya colonnaded walkway running the full lenght of its site and several subsidiary buildings. It was almost certainly founded by the Emperor Zeno474-491 who was a native of the region and is stands as the finest acheivment of the Isauran stone-masons and sculptors. Alahan is a key site in the history of early Byzantine architecture. The site was excavated and studied by Michael Gough but publication was delayed by his early death in 1974; this full report has been completed by his collaborators. Edited by Mary Gough with contributions by Gerard Bakker and Jonathan Coulston. XVIII-235p. diagrams bibliography index fold out plan 24 pages of plates. Born into a Canadian missionary family in Turkey he studied engineering at Queen's University and worked at mining camps in N. Ontario then enlisted in the Canadian Army in August 1914. His lungs seriously damaged he returned to Istanbul in 1925 and was recruited by the American Bible Society. He was responsible for distributing Bibles in the Islamic Middle East and was instrumental in publishing and printing a new translation of the Bible in Turkish when Ataturk's educational reforms of 1928 mandated the use of the new Roman style alphabet. p 75-87 p 115-121 In 1937 he was put in charge if the affairs of both the American and the British & Foreign Bible Societies in Turkey. The pamphlet is in Very Good- condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The pamphlet covers have generalized spots of foxing and toning. The spine ends and corners of the book covers have some light bumping rubbing and beginning wear. The text pages are generally clean though there is light generalized toning. There are several photographs of astronomic objects included with the text. The title page has several ink lines from a former owner. "Born August 27 1886 William Pettingill received only a fourth grade education because of precarious family finances. Saved at thirteen serious Bible study began a decade later after his first encounter with C. I. Scofield. From that point Pettingill moved from Y. M. C. A. Work into the pastorate and teaching. Many of his twenty-one books are revised sermon studies. In 1913 Scofield and Pettingill co-founded the Philadelphia College of the Bible with Pettingill serving as dean. In addition to stimulating students with his vivid visualizations of the Word and his hearty laugh Pettingill wrote widely served on the council of the Central American Mission and was a staunch supporter of the fundamentalist movement. From 1928 to 1950 Dr. Pettingill traveled across North America Central America and Europe sharing his gift of stirring people to action from the word. Keep looking up! was his motto and it became the challenge to many.
