Main title in red and black each sermon also is prefaced by a separate title in some cases also a dedication or other additional leaves. Also contains three additional sermons not listed on the title-page including one in St Margaret's Westminster on June 28 1660 the day of Thanksgivings for the Return of Charles II. Full leather binding. Covers are rubbed bumped and worn and the front cover is detached the spine is almost entirely missing and whar remains is darkened curled and hardened. Internal binding has significant separation in Sermon XII but is just holding here elsewhere internal binding is sound. The front end-paper darkened torn and curled has name and date 1766 and note referring to last sermon also name date and note of 1707. Title page and pages are a little darkened but are otherwise clean except the last sermon which has significant underlining presumable by the 1766 owner. Sermons contained are: I. The second part contains: A Table of all the Principal things contained in the Lives of the Fathers and latter Divines 4; Title page for the Second Part Book 1; the Epistle to the reader 2; verses etc. to S Clark 4; The Lives of Christian Emperors Kings and Soveraign Princes 116pp; An Alphabetical Table of all the chief things contained in this first part of the Second Volume 4; Title Page of the Second Part Book 2 and Second part 104pp Table to Second part 4 - pages are torn across about two-thirds of the way down and the lower parts of both of theses pages are missing. Full leather with worn corners and small amounts of loss at spine ends and short tears in leather on rear marbled end-papers the internal front joint is wholly split and the internal rear joint is cracked but held by cords the covers are firmly attached to the spine. 1638022099Cambridge: Thomas Buck and Roger Daniel 1638. . Your chance to own a complete Bible apart from one leaf printed only 27 years after the King James Version first came out - a huge one 15 inches tall similar to the pictures you may have seen of original 1611 editions. Hinges and extremities have wear and tear and clasps are missing. Early and late pages have furrows perhaps suggesting moisture issues long ago. A few small holes to pages appear to have been caused by rust and therefore presumably contamination of the paper by specks of ferrous metal. There are no extra materials apart from the translators' addresses to King James and to the reader at the front and the Apocrypha located between the Old and New Testaments. No endpapers - inside of front cover has old stamps of Thomas Garbutt Linen and Woollen Draper Barnard Castle likely from 100 or more years ago. The date of 1638 which is printed on the NT title page has also been added in an old but plain style in black pen at the bottom of the illustrated main title page which is a bit worn and grubby. Page 611-612 middle of Hosea is missing seeming at first glance not to have been present but in fact some tiny fragments do appear at the spine. The last page of text is dilapidated but the text of it seems near complete. Some old repairs have been made to borders of pages by pasting on paper which mostly seems of a similar nature to the original and in general when doing this care seems to have been taken not to obscure the text. The exterior is not elaborate but has a 3 inch long rhombus shaped area of gilt decoration to the middle of each of the two boards; there is no lettering or decoration to the spine. There are pictorial drop initials at the beginning of each book of the Bible and Apocrypha. This specific printing is said to have remained the standard text until the printing of Dr Paris' Cambridge edition of 1762. Leather. Average. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. An extra 19th century plate of the author Richard Bentley is also included after the dedication. Bound in modern half calf with marbled boards. Pages are generally clean; a faded name is written with small letters in an early hand on the title page upper corner; minor chipping to outer edge of title. All edges gilt. Richard Bentley 1662-1742 English scholar and literary critic. He was made keeper of the Royal Libraries and was later appointed Master of Trinity College Cambridge. In 1692 he was nominated first Boyle lecturer named after scientist Robert Boyle. He then delivered a series of sermons trying to refute Thomas Hobbes and atheism. In particular the lectures tried to show how the recent work in physics by Sir Isaac Newton offered proof of Gods existence. Bentley even corresponded with Newton on the subject. Originally the sermons were printed separately - several editions of each being issued. In 1693 the tracts were first collected together under the present title with separate paginations. Despite the confusing and obliterated pagination it appears that the text of this book is complete though I have not ascertained whether further illustration plates were called for in this printing beyond the 4/5 including 1 double page which I have noted here. There are other occasional corrections or annotations in very old handwriting and spelling likely by the same person who attempted to renumber the pages. Professionally and sturdily rebound in recent years in a lovely green half leather and matching green cloth binding with gilt bands and black leather title label. Paper in nice condition. 14 x 9¼ x 2¼ inches about 2½ times the size of a typical Banner of Truth hardback. Heavy book extra postage may be necessary please ask. Second Printing. Half-Leather.
