The gloomy Buzzati expression used for the title fully denotes the ambivalence that characterizes this sort of image, as in the greater part of Buzzati?s world. A world which is explored by summoning, amongst others, the psychoanalysis and theory of reception, the history of language and comparative literature. 354 gr. 266 p.

145 pages including index. A collection of historic curiosities that are, or may be, associated with North American postage stamps. For the stories presented in this work, numerous dusty history books and reference works have been researched for those little "gems" of information that present the "other side" to generally accepted beliefs and conceptions. Very often, historic information is based on what others wish us to believe rather than the truth. It is only through the passage of time that the shroud of deception wears thin and mouths silenced in death "speak from their graves" in tattered letters and faded diaries. Adds a new dimension to topical stamp collecting by introducting "Philatelic Curiosities" - strange, unusual and bizarre facts associated with postage stamps. Illustrated in black and white. Clean and unmarked with very light wear. Excellent copy. Book
A clean, unmarked copy with a tight binding. 103 pages. Typewritten photocopy in plastic comb binding. Sort of a shorthand compilation of rites for about 110 separate religious factions, including the Salvation Army, Scientology, mormons, moslem, Taoism, unitarianism, united church of canada, Zen Buddhism, Zoroastrianism, etc. Fun for casual reading, parties, campfire stories...

33834c. 1548. The envelope 141 x 73mm is addressed to "Mr. T. Jenkin. 32 Strada Reale. Malta" contained within is a piece of brown cloth 46 x 21mm with edges frayed on the reverse of the envelope in a contemporary hand "A Piece of "Pizzaio's" "Shroud" taken from the Cathedral at "Lima" in 1870. Not by Miracle. Pizzaro was the Conqueror of Peru about 1520." Gonzalo Pizarro 1513-1548 was a Spanish conquistador who was one of his brother Francisco's main lieutenants during the conquest of the Inca Empire. Gonzalo was cruel and ruthless but undeniably a very effective soldier. After the conquest he fought alongside his brothers and their supporters during the civil wars that broke out among the conquistadors. Later he led the resistance in Peru to the "New Laws" of 1542 taking up arms against an official Spanish Viceroy: this earned him a royal execution in 1548. "Gonzalo's remains were not exposed to the indignities inflicted on Carbajal's whose quarters were hung in chains on the four great roads leading to Cuzco. Centeno saved Pizarro's body from being stripped by redeeming his costly raiment from the executioner and in this sumptuous shroud it was laid in the chapel of the convent of Our Lady of Mercy in Cuzco." Precott The Conquest of Peru p.497. [c. 1548] hardcover
