Containing the Peabody Institute bookplate on the inside front cover which also states Presented by George Peabody. George Peabody 1795-1869 is considered one of the first modern philanthropists establishing trusts to help the poor as well as founding the Peabody Institute. He gained much of his fortune from banking eventually partnering with Junius Spencer Morgan father of J.P. Morgan. Edited and published by Ralph Griffiths the Monthly Review published works of criticism on many authors and books providing bibliographic and historical information on many topics. This volume is part two of the index to that review starting with volume 71 and ending with volume 81. Entries include size and price of all the publications reviewed as well as references to the reviews and an index to remarkable passages. In GOOD condition. Covered in blue paper which has library shelving info on the spine. The paper bears some soiling fading and scuffing. Covers reinforced along the interior hinges with cloth tape. Aforementioned bookplate present. Library ownership stamp and call numbers on the title pages. Small circular library stamp on a few pages in the text. Red ink stamp has been obliterated by ink to title page of vol 2 - it appears occasionally in text. Some staining mainly at start of vol 2. Ink initials at end of both vols. Original full leather binding now worn and stained particularly to vol 1 which has lost all of one lettering piece and part of the other also chewed a little at foot of front board. Joints cracking and small hole to front cover of vol 2. A few insect holes. Signs where ties were originally present but all of these are long gone. Single worm hole to outer margin of first 50 pages of vol 1. Although most definitely a pair the patterning on the leather of the two volumes is different. Page edges red. Externally sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spine and the odd mark to the board. A split to the rear joint. Rear hinge starting but firm. The title translates in English to "The Second Adam Suffering For The First Adam And For All His Descendants. Jesus Dying For The Sins Of Men. Preached In The Form Of Meditations." In French. First edition appears to be from 1692. This is probable 5th Edition. Date of publication not stated but the 4th edition was published in 1709 and the 6th edition in 1731. Final page includes a Privilege from the Society of Jesus dated 1714. Thus publication date was between 1714-1731. A 1.75 inch square cut out of top right corner of title page yet title letters untouched except for a missing "D" at the end of Second. Intricately detailed engraved frontis. Octavo. Rebound with modern black leather spine and cloth covered boards. Five raised bands and gilt title to spine. Title on spine is misprinted as "Le Secon Adam" consistent with missing letter on title page. Laid paper interior rippled from water damage along top margin throughout most of the book. The dampstaining extends to cover more of the page towards the end of the book. The text remains bright. Occasional spots of foxing. 492 pages. FRE/3153. Arnould Bronckart hardcover

Later mounted at the lower edge by a nineteenth-century collector with contemporary bibliographical slips relating to Granger's works affixed below. Light overall toning edge wear and a small area of staining; legible. About good. James Granger was Vicar of Shiplake and the compiler of A Biographical History of England 1769 the landmark work that gave rise to the practice of "Grangerizing" or extra-illustrating books through the insertion of portraits and documentary material. This brief autograph note is addressed to James Brindley the noted bibliophile and Commissioner of the Stamp Office and refers to William Meredith situating it firmly within the circle of eighteenth-century collectors and antiquarian scholarship. Granger's autograph material is uncommon. A small piece of English bibliographical history linking the originator of Grangerizing with one of the foremost collectors of the period. . Good.
