1894210This antiquarian book is in good condition. There is significant wear on the front back and spine of the cover boards and there is much spotting on the spine. The edges of the cover boards are also very worn. The corners are bumped. The lettering on the spine has faded and is fading on the front cover board. There is writing on the front end page. The pages are yellowed and tanned but free of any markings.This hymnal has stood the test of time extremely well.<br /><br /> "As by the action of the General Convention in setting forth a new collection of hymns a new edition of the <i>Church Hymnal</i> was made necessary so by the action of the same Convention in providing for an authorized pointing of the Canticles etc. a new edition of the Chant Book seems to be required or at least desired by many who have requested the editor of the Church Hymnal to prepare it. The same principal which guided the editor in the preparation of the Hymnal viz. to provide for the needs of the average choir and congregation has guided him in his work on this Chant and Service Book; and he sincerely hopes that it may be found useful wherever it is adopted.<br /><br /> Concord Massachusetts<br /> Sept. Very Good. pp 282 Twenty papers read at the Royal Institute of British Architects 862-1863 season formerly owned by the Yorkshire Archaeological Society. The book is bound in handsome pebble green cloth with the Institute's crest in gilt on the front board and is in very good condition with a little wear at the head of the spine. The binder's ticket of Bone and Son appears to the rear. The text is clean and complete beginning with a list of papers and the address from the President W Tite followed by twenty papers which include discussions of the restoration of St Michael Penkevel in Cornwall the construction of Charing Cross Station in London Photographs of the Wells Sculptures and Polychromatic construction at Aston Church. The book is extensively illustrated with engravings in the text as well as full page and fold out engravings. The bookplate of the Yorkshire Archaeological Society appears on the front pastedown together with a 'withdrawn' stamp and no further signs of library ownership. Corner of the boards are worn rounded top of titling on backstrip is missing starting front in rear although the binding is sound Some very minor stains on the pages but in general; the interior is very clean with a fair amount of illustratrations. The name plate of Cyrus Hall McCormick is on the front end page. Cyrus Hall McCormick invented the mechanical reaper which combined all the steps that earlier harvesting machines had performed separately. His time-saving invention allowed farmers to more than double their crop size and spurred innovations in farm machinery. Born in Rockbridge County Virginia Cyrus McCormick derived his interest in invention from his father a Virginia landowner who patented several improved farming implements and worked without success for many years to perfect a mechanical reaper. In July 1831 McCormick succeeded where his father had failed producing a model reaper with all the essential components of later commercial machines. Patenting his invention in 1834 after Obed Hussey had announced 1833 the construction of a reaper of his own McCormick started to manufacture the machine on the family estate in 1837. Six years later he began to license its manufacture in other parts of the country. In 1847 he set up a factory in Chicago founding what eventually became one of the greatest industrial establishments in the United States. An astute businessman McCormick increased his sales with door-to-door canvassing and written guarantees for his ready-to-assemble machinery.
