Based at the monastery it is clear the resources there helped greatly in his research. There is smatterings of foxing throughout books worse at the beginning and end of volumes with Vol II slightly cleaner. The fold out plates are Foxed with some transfer. A reasonable tightly bound set with an interesting provenance and extra biography of author. George Crabbe 24 December 1754 3 February 1832 was an English poet and naturalist. The two works for which Crabbe became best known were The Village 1783 and The Borough 1810 both lengthy poems dealing with the way of life he had experienced. In 1783 he also married Sarah. In 1814 he became Rector of Trowbridge in Wiltshire where he remained. By the time of his death he was well regarded and a friend of William Wordsworth Sir Walter Scott and other major literary figures of the time. Complete in two volumes. In quarter diced bindings with marbled boards. Externally sound though rubbed. Some slight loss to paper on front board of volume II. Front joint of volume I starting but firm. Internally firmly bound. Armorial bookplate of Nathaniel Preston to front pastedowns of both volumes. Ink signatures to title pages. From the library of Scottish lawyer university administrator and bibliophile Dr. Alexander Bennett McGrigor of Cairnoch LLD 1827-1891 with his gilt-stamped leather bookplate to each front pastedown. Octavo two volumes. In three-quarter brown morocco over marbled paper bindings by Maclehose of Glasgow with gilt titles five raised bands and matching marbled endpapers. The original cloth has been laid down on blank leaves and bound in at the rear. The spines are a touch sun faded; otherwise very good and quite lovely. Chapman and Hall hardcover

1868292<p>This book appears to be volume V of a periodical recording primary source accounts of missionary work conducted around the world by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge dating to 1868 and edited by Reverend J.J. Halcombe who was editorial secretary for the society.</p><p>Mission Life appears to have been an illustrated magazine produced by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge. The Society was founded in 1698 by Thomas Bray and is still in existence today making it the oldest Anglican organization devoted to missionary work in the world. It early on began publishing as well being the third-oldest independent publisher in the UK and the primary publisher of Christian books in the UK today.</p><p>This volume contains written accounts and illustrations from missions all over the world including India Australia Africa Canada and elsewhere.</p><p>This copy is in poor condition. It appears to retain its original binding though the back cover has almost entirely separated save for one small section of still attached to the spine at the top. Some pages inside are also torn. However all pages remain tightly bound together.</p><p>There was also a mistake in binding as page 817/818 has been bound at the front.</p><p>Names of former owners are written on the front fly leaf and on the title page.</p> William MacIntosh hardcover

The letter measures 9 x 7-1/4 inches two pages. Autograph letter signed dated Draycot September 26th 1833. A couple of letters ink smudged otherwise very good condition. Letter to unnamed correspondent. Extending an invitation to visit and noting that the "picture framer at Newcastle . Had seen a proof of Sir Walter before the letters some time ago." The author of this letter is possibly Rev. Robert Ker Porter of Draycott-in-the-Moors in Staffordshire. The Heath House mentioned in this letter is also located in Staffordshire. Rev. Perforation stamps through many if not all plates cardpocket on rear free endpaper. Bound in very faded greenish blue cloth with red & gilt Tomoe-ko mark on the front board. 346 pp. with two folding maps at rear as well as. This particular copy is exlibrary. There is a blind stamp on the title-page and there are perforation stamps through both the maps at the rear. The first map of the Alps has a tear and a split on minor consequence through one of the folds. The cover corners are sharp but the outer hinges are splitting and weak and there is some loss at the top left of the spine. This copy will never win a beauty contest but it is a complete copy of this rare book. John Murray hardcover
