The first of many significant and original contributions to Australian geology palaeontology and zoology by Father Tenison-Woods 1832-1889. These days he is perhaps more widely known for the fact that with 'Mother Mary MacKillop he helped to found the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart at Penola in 1866' 'Australian Dictionary of Biography'. The author was particularly interested in the teachings of the Brahmo Samaj an important monotheïstic reformist movement that started in Calcutta in 1828. Members of this movement and Christians regularly clashed leading to heated debates. However Reverend Cesary who is otherwise unknown tries to change misconceptions about the Brahmo Samaj and find common ground.The work is divided in 5 parts which explain Hinduism and Brahmo doctrines describe a journey from the author from Calcutta to Bombay offer a charming description of 19th-century Calcutta and explain daily living of Hindus. Together the different parts offer a fine portrayal of the late 19th-century socio-religious landscape of North India in general and Calcutta in particular.With the stamp of the Kapuzinerkloster Falkenburg on the first flyleaf. The edges and corners of the boards are slightly scuffed and the head and tail of the spine are bumped. He was raised by his mother in his Indigenous culture until the age of 14 when went to live with his father. After converting to Methodism at the age of 21 he became an important missionary for the Wesleyan church. He was a spirited and charismatic speaker and used his multilingual skills to translate biblical texts and hymns into Ojibwe and Mohawk. He served as a liaison between some Indigenous peoples and the colonial government able to advocate for Indigenous groups with local governments.</p><p>The book begins with a brief autobiography by Jones explaining his background and the course of his life followed by excerpts from his journals.</p><p>This is a rare and fascinating primary source document for life in pre-Confederation Canada including a first-person account of Indigenous life.</p> Anson Green hardcover

A manuscript account handwritten and signed by Reverend Charles John Heathcote after visiting a young dying woman Hannah More three days before her death circa the 1820s in Middlesex England. Approx. 400 words and is near fine with some light foxing tiny tears and creasing with all words intact. The account begins with a short description "Departed this life on the 10th inst. Hannah L. daughter of Ezekiel Moore in the 16th of her age. On wensday sic preceding her death the writer of these lines was called upon to visit her and it proved to him both a profitable and pleasing visit". After this the letter is primarily focused on the More's condition and her acceptance of death "I found her in a state of uncommon resignation to the will of God patiently waiting the hour of her departure. I want the the sic will of the lord to be done whether I live or die". Heathcote writes that More asked him to preach at her funeral and for two hymns to be recited "Come humble sinner in whose breast a thousand thoughts resolve" and "When thou my righteous Jude shall come". Heathcote documents More's interactions with her family and friends before commending her on her devoutness to God. He writes finally that he is happy to have gotten to see her and finishes with "Let me die the death of the righteous that my latter end may be like his".<br /> <br /> Reverend Charles John Heathcote was born in Middlesex England in 1796 and followed in his father's footsteps by becoming a reverend. He wrote one book of sermons and hymns Last Sermons: Late Incumbent of St. Thomas and passed away at the age of 77 after practicing as a reverend in his home town for the duration of his life. <br /> <br /> An interesting and empathetic account of a young woman's death from a reverend in England during the 1820s. unknown

La raccolta comprende tutte le opere in volgare del Boccaccio compresa la Caccia di Diana di cui costituisce la prima edizione a stampa e il testamento dell'autore presentato anche in latino.; il curatore rende conto negli apparati delle scelte ed emendazioni ortografiche operate delle edizioni a stampa esaminate dei manoscritti riscontrati: per la Caccia di Diana ad esempio fino ad allora misconosciuta e mai pubblicata il curatore si avvalse dei codici 1059 1060 e 1066 della Biblioteca Riccardiana e del codice della Biblioteca Laurenziana Pluteo 90 superiore 93. Per il Decamerone il curatore si rifà alla lezione dell'abate Colombo data alle stampe in Parma nel 1812 includendone la prefazione e le note accanto ad altre «del Martinelli del Rolli e alcune del Mannelli»; inclusa anche la Lezione e le Osservazioni di Luigi Fiacchi e il Corbaccio nella lezione del codice Mannelli. La cura filologica fu apprezzata dall'attento Bartolomeo Gamba che nella Serie di testi di lingua scriveva: «Deesi alle diligenti cure d'Ignazio Moutier la pregevolissima raccolta presente in cui le diverse opere dell'archimandrita della italiana letteratura vennero possibilmente emendate col ragguaglio dei codici». L'esemplare qui proposto porta sulle legature le armi della famiglia Strozzi ripetute sui frontespizi con il motto «Expecto»; la biblioteca della casata fu soggette a varie fortune e smembramenti: già nel 1785 all'estinzione del ramo maschile i codici furono donati da Maria Caterina alla Laurenziana e alla Magliabechiana mentre i libri a stampa furono venduti dalle eredi Eleonora e Anna Strozzi «dopo averli offerti in vendita al Governo che si rifiutò di comprarli» Minicucci Roberto Ridolfi mago bibliotecario in La Bibliofilia vol. 99 n. 2 1997. Nell'Ottocento il principe Ferdinando Strozzi ricostituì parte della biblioteca che fu infine definitivamente dispersa negli anni '30 quando il principe Roberto vendette Palazzo Strozzi all'INA: le carte manoscritte attraverso diverse acquisizioni e donazioni passarono sotto la tutela pubblica mentre i libri a stampa furono in parte acquistati da Roberto Ridolfi in parte posti in vendita popolando i cataloghi di Hoepli Olschki De Marinis e altre librerie antiquarie e case d'asta. He further details all his contacts congregants welcoming him new purchases and moving into his new home with his wife Ellen. Local historians and collectors will delight as the Reverend fully names all his contacts visitors and occasions attended. There are a great number of entries dealing with his personal economy.
