She died in 1974 at 49 years old while serving as the Mexican ambassador to Israel.<br /> <br /> 65 pages. First edition first printing. This copy has been bound in full dyed calf preserving the original front and rear wrappers. The leather binding is faded and worn at the edges. This copy is inscribed to noted Mexican playwright Emilio Carballido another member of the Generación de los 50. The inscription is hard to read but it is something like "Para Emilio Carballido uno de nuestros más sólidos valores. Con el afecto de su amiga Rosario." Roughly: For Emilio Carballido one of our most valuable talents. With affection from his friend Rosario. Very scarce signed and especially so as an association copy. The object of this book is to make known some of the accomplishments of the Fascist Regime. The books is profusely illustrated with spectacular b/w photographs and full page photogravures in slightly changing tones. <br /> <br /> The first chapter depicts W.W.I. as a great victory for Italy and illustrates Mussolini's participation and experience during the war leading into the "red days" with anti-Italians fleeing the advance of the fascists during the March on Rome. A depiction in photogravure of tall fuming smokestacks in light burgundy color is headlined "This is the war which we prefer" – Mussolini. The forceful "blood and soil" propaganda tone is reflected throughout the publication as it is in the second photogravure reproduced in the same color tone "When the soil is fertile the people are happy." – Mussolini opening the extended chapter on Italian agriculture.<br /> <br /> The following chapters treat motherhood and childhood including subchapters on young Fascists sports in Italy housing and medical issues an extensive chapter on aviation the Italian Navy roads and bridges aqueducts railroads low-cost housing Rome and other major Italian cities as well as provinces including Italian Libya. The final chapter deals with the Italian Empire and its definition: A Will to Power Capable of Surmounting all obstacles with subchapters on Autarchy and the Duce. The final sixty pages contain advertisements and introductions of entrepreneurs. <br /> <br /> Text in Italian. Binding with some wear along edges some scuffing along edges and light scuffs on cover. Back cover with some soiling and one inch of cloth binding loose at top of spine but present not damaged. Binding rubbed. Front free endpaper with vertical crease but not damaged except for minor chip at top right corner. Endpapers with very light aerial foxing. Manuscript chart envelope affixed with glue to back pastedown. Envelope contains three printed cardstock decryption keys. It appears envelope has never been open. Presentation copy signed and dated by author on front endpage. Very good condition. An unusual explanation and examination of cryptography by New York architect Rosario Candela utilizing the supposedly unbreakable ciphers of French Commandant Bazieres. A historical researcher as well as a military officer Bazeries was the author of the highly influential codebreaking book Les Chiffres Secrets Devoiles the first known person to break the "Grand Chiffre de 1691" code utilized by King Louis XIV and a critic of historical and current French encoding methods. In 1898 Bazeries proposed the French military adopt his unique method of creating ciphers using only pencil paper and a keyword offering them some test examples. Furious that the government rejected his code for lack of security despite being unable to solve it themselves Bazeries published his proposed method and a group of four ciphers the last of which was unsolved until this English language translation and criticism from Rosario Candela. Candela a Sicilian immigrant taught himself cryptography out of a mixture of boredom curiosity and the stagnation of the Great Depression. Self-taught from a variety of French and Italian books he imported from Europe Candela was a skilled code breaker and manages to provide a thorough overview and analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of Bazeries system. Rosario Candela was so successful in his efforts that he began to teach a class on cryptography at Hunter College in 1941 the first public course of its type in the United States and was later tasked with assisting the Office of Strategic Services OSS in World War II.This copy includes three pages of handwritten cryptography work notes including a full page demonstrating the Russian cipher system used on the Eastern Front in WWI apparently borrowed from Contributions of the Cryptographic Bureaus In The World War by Swedish cryptographer Yves Gylden translated and printed in English in the Navy Signal Corps Bulletin in 1935.
