Simons was an ordained Catholic priest from Friesland in the Low Countries who followed the progress of the Reformation and recognized the need for reform and adherence to the teachings of the Bible. Transubstantiation and infant baptism were two doctrinal issues that he particularly found wanting. Through his exhaustive study of scripture he came to understand that they were not in the Bible and therefore he could no longer perform the sacrament as prescribed by Catholic liturgy. Ein Fundament und Klare Anweisung is a record of his biblical studies which had a significant influence on Dutch reform movements and the growth of the Anabaptist sect.
