A brief report for the Illinois Legislature on those seeking expenses due to the 'Hancock difficulties' of 1846. It states that due to the "advanced stage" of the legislative session there is not ample time to investigate the claims of money owed and destroyed property and for the time the "agents for said claimants have leave to withdraw their accounts at pleasure." The briefness of this item as well as its matter-of-fact style masks the horrors of the events that it eludes to: the Martyrdom and the forced exile of the Mormons from Nauvoo. Flake/Draper 4189. Shows some very light rubbing of the boards scattered foxing and oil marks throughout but unobstructive of the text light cursive former owner names of the period written on the title page which are also unobstructive of text or design somewhat dust marked fore-edges otherwise the binding is strong and tight the text is unmarked and the boards remain bright and distinctive. Hardcover bound in original brown leather with a burgundy leather title label on the spine. The binding is worn and bumped but is sound. Hinges secure. The leather shows some scuffing and the rear cover has a small tear / hole in the leather. The text block is sound and square. The second front flyleaf has a likely early 20th century gift inscription in ink. The text is toned but generally clean. A few pages are dog eared. Page 548 contains the 1848 act to abolish Slavery in Connecticut prevent the importation fo slaves and to require former masters to pay for the care of emancipated slaves. <br /><br /></p> Case, Tiffany and Company hardcover
