19477621Winnipeg Manitoba: Gauvin Gentzel Studio 1947. First Edition. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph panoramic format measuring 13" x 7.25" mounted on its original heavy card mat to an overall size of 14" x 17". Bears the imprint of the prominent Winnipeg firm "Gauvin Gentzel Studio" to the upper left. A printed caption below the image identifies the "Manitoba Legislative Assembly 1947" and lists all members by row along with the Speaker and legislative staff.

A crisp and detailed panoramic photograph capturing the 22nd Manitoba Legislature in session. The image provides a rare wide-angle view of the historic chamber with all members present at their desks. This 1947 assembly is a fascinating snapshot of Manitoba's unique "Coalition" era. The government led by Premier Stuart S. Garson K.C. pictured in the 3rd row was a fusion of Liberal-Progressives and Progressive Conservatives a "non-partisan" administration that had its origins in the war years.

The photograph is a roster of Manitoba's post-war political establishment. In addition to Premier Garson who would leave in 1948 to join the federal cabinet the roster includes his successor Hon. Douglas L. Campbell 3rd Row who would go on to be Premier for a decade. Also present are numerous other cabinet ministers and future luminaries including: Hon. J. S. McDiarmid 3rd Row who would be appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba in 1953; Lt.-Col. Gordon Churchill 1st Row a future federal MP and prominent cabinet minister in the Diefenbaker government; Gunnar S. Thorvaldson K.C. 2nd Row a future Senator.

Most remarkably this image captures the legislature's sole dissenter and one of its most notable figures: William "Bill" A. Kardash 2nd Row. As the only member of the Labor-Progressive Party Communist in the assembly Kardash was a conspicuous and often isolated voice in the coalition-dominated house. His presence seated amongst the very establishment he ideologically opposed is a powerful visual representation of the era's complex political landscape at the dawn of the Cold War.

The photograph itself is a fine example of the large-format group portraiture perfected by the Gauvin Gentzel Studio one of Winnipeg's leading photographic firms for decades known for their clarity and high-quality compositions. The silver gelatin print retains excellent clarity sharp detail and strong contrast. The mat is clean and bright with only very light toning to the edges and minor bumping to the corners. A near-fine example.

Gauvin Gentzel Studio unknown

1932205181932. African American Religion Silver gelatin photograph of twenty-two African American congregates at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. 1932. Approx. 4.5" x 6.5". Photograph shows twenty-two congregates of varying ages twenty-one adults and one child dressed in "Sunday best" sitting and standing in two rows in front of a church sanctuary. Caption written on photograph reads "Ward #1 Mt. Zion Baptist Church 1932". Baptist Protestantism has been the predominant religion among African Americans from the Civil War until today however the Great Depression marked a particularly difficult time period for Baptist churches across the United States. In 1932 Protestant church attendance was at an all time low in part due to the church's inability to dispense charity to the needy and due to a general loss of faith in the face of financial hardship. African American Baptist Mt. Zion congregations are also known for their roles in the Civil Rights Movement. The churchgoers pictured were among a select few who remained steadfast practitioners of Baptist Protestantism during a difficult time in U.S. history. Very good condition. unknown

1942053306Ankara: TBMM Hususi" Letterhead Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara 1942. Soft cover. Very Good. Original manuscript autograph letter signed ALS by Ali Çetinkaya sent to Turkish doctor Ethem Akif Battalgil who was the father of Fahire Battalgil Battalgazi who was the first Turkish zoologist. For Battalgil's brother's death Çetinkaya is conveying his condolences. The letter was written and signed by Ali Çetinkaya but he added his wife and daughter. Dated 11. IV. 1942 Ankara. Ali Çetinkaya also known as "Kel" Ali Bey was an Ottoman-born Turkish army officer and politician who served eight terms in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey including a period in 1939-40 as his country's first Minister of Transport. He was born in Kara Hisâr-i Sâhib present-day Afyonkarahisar in Hüdavendigâr Vilayet as the son of Ahmed Efendi. He studied in the Bursa Military High School Bursa Askerî Idadisi . After graduating from military high school he entered the Ottoman Military Academy Mekteb-i Füsûn-u Harbiyye-i Sâhâne In 1898 he graduated the academy and joined the Ottoman military as a Second Lieutenant Mülâzim-i Sani . During World War I he served for the army in the Caucasus and Galicia fronts. When the Greek forces were landing at Smyrna on May 15 1919 he was a lieutenant colonel and the commander of 172nd Infantry Regiment stationed in the Aegean coastal town of Ayvalik. His regiment was under the command of the 56th Division of Hürrem Bey. Ali played a key role in the first stage of the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 starting with the opening battle. He was briefly able to hold back the advance into the city of Greek occupation forces. His action is considered to mark the first shots fired by regular forces in the 1919-22 Greco-Turkish War although there were earlier confrontations in which irregular militias participated including the battle involving Hasan Tahsin in Izmir as well as actions in Urla and Ödemis. The hill in Ayvalik from where the first shots were fired is now called Ilk Kursun Tepesi First Bullet Hill. Today there is a military rehabilitation center on that hill. After the war Ali Çetinkaya was elected to the Turkish Grand National Assembly for eight successive terms and served until 1942 holding ministerial posts in six different governments including with the formation of a Ministry of Transport becoming Turkey's first Minister of Transport. Ali Çetinkaya is considered a hero in Turkey. Cunda Island of Ayvalik was renamed Alibey Adasi Ali Bey Island after him although the old name remains in common use.

TBMM Hususi" Letterhead, Dated 11. IV. 1942, Ankara paperback
