Later half cloth and marbled papered boards bound without lettering by a capable amateur all edges uncut; leaves heavily cockled and occasionally creased; minor signs of age and use outer pages a little chipped foxed and dusty small dogears to some leaves at the beginning and end of each volume; leading margins of the plates slightly chipped and a little dusty with occasional light spots of foxing and a few small stains almost always outside the platemark; clean tear to one plate neatly sealed; small inkstamp on the title pages and one half-title 'Bibliotheca Bernensis ordinis praemonstratensis Heeswijk'; ownership signatures in ink crossed out and pencil on the half-titles; a decent set worthy of a more sympathetic binding. A translation by J.F. Serrurier of the 'Pomologisches theoretisch-praktisches Handwörterbuch' by Johann Ludwig Christ the title page here incorrectly giving his initials as 'J.C.'; it incorporates additional material from 'A Treatise on the Culture and Management of Fruit-Trees' 1802 by William Forsyth. Text with some dusting Good.<br /> <br /> This pamphlet demonstrates the democratic self-governing principles of American congregations unlike the hierarchical organization of their British antecedents. It tells the story of the decline and fall of Reverend Jonathan Bowman the minister of this Unitarian Universalist Church from 1729 until 1773 when he "came somewhat violently into collision with his parish" web site of Dorchester Historical Society. The Congregation objected to Bowman's "absolute and unlimited power in the Church of Christ in this place contrary to constitution of Church government." <br /> The crisis was initiated by Reverend Bowman's chickens who trespassed into the neighboring yard of Paul Hall his parishioner who punished the offending creatures by executing them. In a display of chutzpah Hall then brought his baby to the Church for baptism. Bowman refused to perform the ceremony. The bitter dispute ended with Bowman's ouster after more than four decades of service. Bowman was pilloried for refusing the baptism; and his sermons were deemed excessively short and old-fashioned. Folio bifolium 32cm; patent accomplished in manuscript printed within typographically decorative border on second panel with directions on facing panel adorned with large woodcut illustration of a horse's head in the bridle with letters designating the different parts. Old mail folds brief evidence of tape to margins else a Very Good to Near Fine example.<br /> <br /> Evidently unrecorded indenture form providing a deed of rights to this improved safety bridle and line signed by both Henry H. Stehman and his business partner Amos B. Christ together with two local witnesses on the 24th of August 1866. The indenture provides Stehman and Amos production and sale rights for Bucks County for $300. The facing panel provides directions for using the harness accompanied by a handsome woodcut of a steed in the contraption. The bridle required elastic gum which "can be had in any of the stores in our principle sic cities where Goodyear's Gum Goods are sold." <br /> <br /> No copies in the trade or OCLC as of May 2026.
