Mary and her husband Herbert travelled to Africa as missionaries in 1909. "For some years they pioneered at Lotumbe but the crown of their service came in 1928 when they established at Bolenge a school for future leaders of Africa and began their teaching service which was to continue throughout the rest of their years in Congo. That school was the Congo Christian Institute" Smith.
