"Here is a man who hopes to be 'not too good too moral nor too weak' says Albert Christ-Janer introducing Boardman Robinson the person to an American audience which has watched his progress from the world-famous cartoons in the old Masses the Liberator and the New York Tribune to its climax in his color paintings and murals and in the illustrations of such American classics as Whitman's Leaves of Grass and Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology. Here is the record in words of how a sincere artist struggled to maintain his integrity in the early twentieth-century sloughs of art nouveau to develop his craft into the finest draftsmanship America has seen and then to rediscover in color the technical secrets of the old masters at a time when most painters scorned artisanship as unimportant. Here is the record in black and white and in color of the artist's own work in many mediums and many techniques but always in sincerity and always strong with the force of his own artistic conviction." - dust jacket description.
