These are followed by 'King Artus' in English apparently transcribed from 'Magazin ed. Berliner XII 1885 Hebrew p. I-II'. The 8vo leaf carries a manuscript page of translation into English. For the mediaeval tale 'King Artus' the only known copy of which is in the Vatican Library see Curt Leviant 'King Artus: A Hebrew Arthurian Romance of 1279' Syracuse University Press 2003. The first letter is by The Secretary of the Interior Ray Lyman Wilbur a medical doctor himself dated February 19 1930 where he states that he will deliver a copy of this book to the President. The second letter is by the first White House Press Secretary Geroge Akerson confirming that the President has received a copy of this book. Both letters are stamped and include a watermark emblem of the United States of America. <br><br>There is also a letter written by the Charaka Club inviting Doctors to a dinner at the Coffee House Club presumably with Casey A. Wood and Ray Lyman Wilbur attending. <br><br>This medical trearty of the eye was for half a millennium the great authority and most popular manual in its field. Twenty two manuscripts and 18 printed page editions are known though few of either survive a tribute to its usefulness to the surgeon oculist and cataract operator. Mild wear at extremities; bookplate and old shelf marks at pastedown and endleaf; else an attractive copy with fine crisp text.<br /> <br /> Collation: 8 A-2E8 2F4 = 236 leaves.<br /> <br /> First Latin edition of this controversial work by Nektarios 1602/05-1676/85 the Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem from 1661 to 1669 dedicated to Thomas Tenison the archbishop of Canterbury and King William III. Fabricius notes that Nektarios was born in Crete and educated at Athens under Theophilus Corydales. He was a strict partisan of Greek orthodoxy and endorsed the Confession of Mogilas in 1662. “During his patriarchate the Romish emissaries were very active in endeavoring to persuade the Greek Christians of Palestine… to unite with the Church of Rome; among them a Franciscan named Peter was especially active in distributing five tracts in defense of the papal authority. These tracts Nectarius answered by the publication of another entitled Peri tes arches tou Papa antirresis - On the Beginning of the Pope Antichrist which is a fair refutation of the five principles laid down in the Roman Catholic tracts†McClintock & Strong Cyclopedia 6:914. This refutation first appeared at Yassy in 1681 or 1682 and was later translated into the present Latin version by the eminent scholar and Huguenot refugee to England Pierre Allix 1641-1717. The conclusion of the text notes “Excusus per Metrophanem Hieromonachum Giazi Yassy in Moldavia A. MDCLXXII†-- the year of the Synod of Jerusalem which represented the climax of the Orthodox reaction against the heresies of Cyril Lucaris. Following the main text are two brief discussions of the Jesuits pp.385-406: De Jesuitis On the Jesuits; De Jesuita qui in Orientales nugas es mendacia effugiit On the Jesuits Who Spewed Falsehoods upon the Easterners. 1920List1734Jerusalem 1920. Silver gelatin photographs measuring 11 ½ x 9 ¼ inches hand colored. Some light normal wear near fine overall quite attractive and suitable for framing. Fine. The American Colony in Jerusalem started by 1881 by members of a Christian utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford of Chicago developed in the next fifty years into one of the primary photographic historians of the city prior to Zionism. The Spaffords were joined by the Swedish American and Swedish-American Christians. They eventually moved into the former residence of Rabbah Effendi al-Husseini who served as an official during the Ottoman era. The building is the site of the current American Colony hotel. <br /> <br /> Collected here are seven hand-colored photographs taken and sold during their period of prolific output. They are particularly well preserved examples showing the group’s skill for hand coloring. Little is known about the photographers themselves or their processes and the group’s history continues to be delineated by curator Rachel Lev who has housed their archive in one of the colony’s outbuildings. Original examples of the group’s work are not terribly common on the market despite their important role in documenting the region during this period. unknown

The carte-de-visite size images are beautifully sharp and clear with rich tonal quality. They depict both the interior and exterior of the mosques with great detail showcasing the beauty of Islamic architecture.With an owner's inscription in Arabic on the front pastedown. Contemporary calf-backed olive/myrtle wood beveled boards binding Jerusalem “five-fold†cross carved on center of front cover minor scuffing rubbing very minor split at center glue seam front & back covers minor chipping to lower rear corner brown morocco rebacking still a VG exemplar w/ gift manuscript note “From Genevieve March 2 1922†on front pastedown presented to James Duval Phelan 1861-1930 banker philanthropist and former San Francisco Mayor and later California Senator 1914-1920. Ironically the album appears to have been presented to the rabid yellow peril anti-Japanese & Chinese politico while he traveled around the World through Japan China Hong Kong India Egypt Palestine Constantinople and Europe with Phelan’s Phoenix rising from the ashes San Francisco bookplate on front pastedown. This marvelous souvenir photo album composed of Ottoman-era albumen images captured not only recreated iconic religious scenes but also captured Jerusalemites in city streets and the Holy Land in the opening decades of the 20th Century. The album opens with the image of the “Street Scene inside Jaffa Gate†which captures Frederick Vester & Co.’s American Colony shop and photography studio in the right fore-ground of the image with bustling street and clock tower prominent in the center of the image. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The series included here which incorporates a view of the room for the Last Supper and a nicely composed image of a beautifully terraced Garden of Gethsemane follows with the Stations of the Cross. The often incorporate residents in their daily lives watering donkeys pilgrims praying at Stations merchants and those wandering through the gates and winding streets of the ancient city. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times†beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate†commune controlled by “Messages from God†to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday†Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message†that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904.
