Original gelatin silver print 29 x 23 cm of produce sellers marketing their wares to passers-by on a Bethlehem street; bottom right corner stamped by the American Colony Jerusalem. Some light wrinkling crease down the middle of image. Generally very good. The American Colony in Jerusalem was founded by Chicago Presbyterians Horatio and Anne Stafford in 1881. With an initial following of sixteen they set out to establish a Christian Utopia inside the Holy City's ancient walls. Horatio died of malaria in 1888 yet the movement continued to grow mainly preoccupying itself with feeding and educating the city's poor and disadvantaged. Charity of this kind required a regular stream of income which flowed in part from the sale of photographs taken initially by Elijah Meyers a Jewish convert living in Jerusalem. The Colony's Photographic Branch continued to document the sights and scenes of Jerusalem until internal disagreement lead to its dissolution in the 1950s. 65527Jerusalem 1930. Original black & white photographic print 23 x 29 cm blind-stamp of the American Colony Jerusalem to lower right corner. Very good conditon. The American religious foundation and philanthropy that informally became known as the American Colony of Jerusalem was established in the Ottoman Empire in 1881 as a "Christian utopian society" led by American religious leader Horatio Gates Spafford and his Norwegian wife Anne Tobine Larsen Øglende. Largely concerned with providing social services education meeting spaces and medical care it became known for producing and publishing an important documentation photographic series of the area of Jerusalem starting in the early 1900s. The community lasted until the 1950s. Around 1900 Elijah Meyers a member of the American Colony began taking photographs of places and events in and around the city of Jerusalem. Meyers's work eventually expanded into a full-fledged photographic division within the colony including Hol Lars Lewis Larsson and G. Eric Matson who later renamed the effort as The Matson Photo Service. Their interest in archaeological artifacts such as the Lion Tower in Tripoli pictured here and the detail of their photographs led to widespread interest in their work by archaeologists. 190027834Israel 1900. Otherwise very good condition. An albumen photograph taken by photographers of the American Colony. The American Colony was founded by the Spafford family in Jerusalem in 1881 with a second wave arriving in 1896 which believed that its work would expedite the Second Coming of Christ. The utopian Christian sect devoted themselves to the people of Jerusalem caring for the sick and setting up soup kitchens and schools with the aim of ensuring their salvation through charitable work.

Anna & Horatio Spafford had suffered business losses in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. By 1873 the family had recovered and were to celebrate Christmas in Paris. Horatio was detained and Anna sailed with their four daughters from New York. Their ship sank in a collision with another mid-Atlantic with the loss of all four girls only Anna surviving. Horatio rushed to meet his wife in Wales. On his transatlantic crossing he wrote the verses that were to become the hymn "It is Well With My Soul". By 1881 their faith led the Spaffords to establish the American Colony in Jerusalem. Elijah Meyers a member of the colony began taking photographs in Jerusalem of places and important events including the visit of Wilhelm II. This endeavor turned out to be quite profitable and photography was incorporated into the society's fundraising efforts. Meyer first headed the photographic division: he was followed by Lewis Larsson who traveled extensively in the Middle East from 1903 - 1910.

This image is one of Larsson's from his travels. 8 1/2 x 10 3/4" with a number and a title in English German and French. The artists for this work were the best Flemish engravers of the day including members of the Wierx family C. de Mallory and A. Collaert all related to the Galle publishers of Antwerp. Most of the plates are after drawings of the Italian artist Bernardo Passari and a few are after drawings by Martin de Vos. This engraving is from a later French edition published in Paris by Jean Baptiste Loison in 1683. A little dusty with light staining minor scuffing. The American Colony produced created developed printed hand-coloured and sold thematic photographs stereoviews panoramic photos postcards custom hand-coloured glass lantern slides along with deluxe thematic souvenir albums such as this one. The photographers have captured the baroque & ornate Station Calvary the Church of the Holy Sepulchre a view of the Dome of the Rock and a teeming scene of women men and families seated and standing praying at the Wailing Wall. The American Colony emerged from the evangelical “End Times†beliefs inculcated by Horatio Spafford and Anna Larssen Spafford in 19th-Century Chicago who despite their profitable lectures the support & encouragement of Dwight Moody and at best questionable financial chicanery shipped out for the Holy Land in 1881 ahead of their creditors for $ 100000. Eventually the largely “celibate†commune controlled by “Messages from God†to Anna Spafford and through lectures and charity merged with Olof Larson’s “Doomsday†Larsonite believers along with Frederick Vester and a number of photographers began operating the American Colony store near the Jaffa gate and vastly expanding their tourist photographic operations. By 1910 they had several employees and the noted American Colony photographers such as Elijah Meyers and Lewis Larsson extended their talents across Palestine capturing not only the River Jordan but life in Bethlehem Bethany Syria Damascus and many other locations across the Ottoman Empire controlled areas. Although the American Colony projected a harmonious community bound together by simple Christian piety the sect was tightly controlled by Anna who not only restricted and monitored all correspondence by Colony members ordered shunning of those who ignored her dictates and maintained direct control over their finances. She also enforced marital celibacy until she “received a Message†that her daughter Bertha and Frederick Vester could marry in 1904. 1920List1734Jerusalem 1920. Silver gelatin photographs measuring 11 ½ x 9 ¼ inches hand colored. Some light normal wear near fine overall quite attractive and suitable for framing. Fine. The American Colony in Jerusalem started by 1881 by members of a Christian utopian society led by Anna and Horatio Spafford of Chicago developed in the next fifty years into one of the primary photographic historians of the city prior to Zionism. The Spaffords were joined by the Swedish American and Swedish-American Christians. They eventually moved into the former residence of Rabbah Effendi al-Husseini who served as an official during the Ottoman era. The building is the site of the current American Colony hotel.

Collected here are seven hand-colored photographs taken and sold during their period of prolific output. They are particularly well preserved examples showing the group’s skill for hand coloring. Little is known about the photographers themselves or their processes and the group’s history continues to be delineated by curator Rachel Lev who has housed their archive in one of the colony’s outbuildings. Original examples of the group’s work are not terribly common on the market despite their important role in documenting the region during this period. unknown
