Antoine-Joseph-Amable Feydeau 1659-1741 prior general of the Carmelite Order corrected the Greek text of the first work and noted that the printer and editor were “damned heretics†tr. In the second work a 19th-century reader penned nearly one thousand words with alternate readings largely from BnF ms. Grec 174 theological concepts and extracts of other authorities. Both books are in very nice condition; from the library of T.K. Brooker.<br />       Ad I: THE FIRST APPEARANCE OF ANY PORTION OF THE ORIGINAL GREEK TEXT OF CYRIL’S CATECHETICAL LECTURES. Based on a manuscript owned by collector Henri de Mesmes now BnF ms. Grec 954 this edition has seven of the eighteen lectures for the catechumens of Jerusalem. The complete Greek text did not appear for nearly half a century. Variously attributed to Cyril or his successor John II of Jerusalem c. 356-417 the Mystagogic Catecheses follows. Together these prepared the newly baptized for first communion and provide some of the earliest details of liturgical practices in the Eastern church. An ex-Platonist Church Father Athenagoras makes the philosophical case for Christianity to the famously intellectual emperor Marcus Aurelius and defends the new religion against accusations of cannibalism promiscuity and atheism. Conrad Gessner 1516-65 edited the Greek text and translated it into Latin from a now lost manuscript family. This edition closes with Athenagoras’ On the Resurrection of the Dead edited and translated by Dutch humanist P. 190027834Israel 1900. Otherwise very good condition. An albumen photograph taken by photographers of the American Colony. The American Colony was founded by the Spafford family in Jerusalem in 1881 with a second wave arriving in 1896 which believed that its work would expedite the Second Coming of Christ. The utopian Christian sect devoted themselves to the people of Jerusalem caring for the sick and setting up soup kitchens and schools with the aim of ensuring their salvation through charitable work. <br /> <br /> Anna & Horatio Spafford had suffered business losses in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. By 1873 the family had recovered and were to celebrate Christmas in Paris. Horatio was detained and Anna sailed with their four daughters from New York. Their ship sank in a collision with another mid-Atlantic with the loss of all four girls only Anna surviving. Horatio rushed to meet his wife in Wales. On his transatlantic crossing he wrote the verses that were to become the hymn "It is Well With My Soul". By 1881 their faith led the Spaffords to establish the American Colony in Jerusalem. Elijah Meyers a member of the colony began taking photographs in Jerusalem of places and important events including the visit of Wilhelm II. This endeavor turned out to be quite profitable and photography was incorporated into the society's fundraising efforts. Meyer first headed the photographic division: he was followed by Lewis Larsson who traveled extensively in the Middle East from 1903 - 1910.<br /> <br /> This image is one of Larsson's from his travels. 8 1/2 x 10 3/4" with a number and a title in English German and French. Room Old Fast House Nt. Barclays Bank AT ONCE. Always open. DON'T delay in this case safety is allied to speed".
