A scarce translated edition of Select Sermons from Jean Baptiste Massillon Bishop of Clermont the presentation copy translated and signed by clergyman and translator Rutton Morris. Privately printed for Morris and sold by J. Nsibet in 1830.Rebacked with velvet boards and with brassed edges and clip. Contains a frontispiece of Massillon drawn by British artist John West Giles and with Morris's signed inscription to the blank before.A popular French preacher Massillon was praised by the Encyclopaedists for his eloquence and was also respected for his sensitive treatment to moral subjects with these sermons delving into righteousness and judgement. Morris translated French works by Lhomond and was a clergyman at Hockliffe in Bedfordshire. In the publisher's original cloth rebacked with velvet boards and with brassed edges and clip. Externally mostly smart with the odd fading patch to velvet. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a minor lift to head. Slight rubbing to brass decoration edges and clip. Marble end papers are bright and clean. Bookseller's stamp to rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean with spotting to blanks frontispiece and title leaf. With a letter to the reader from the translator as well as a chapter on the Life of Massillon.Two ink inscriptions. Dated 1826 and 1852 on front end paper and inside front cover. In full calf binding. Externally generally smart lightly rubbed in places. Some light marks to the boards. Light rubbing to the extremities. Loss to spine label. Light fading to the spine.
