In full calf binding. Externally generally smart lightly rubbed in places. Some light marks to the boards. Light rubbing to the extremities. Loss to spine label. Light fading to the spine. Good colour with bright gold gilt on spine and corners. Marks on rear endpaper. Ink inscriptions on front end paper and front paste down. Spots to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Contains a frontispiece of Massillon drawn by British artist John West Giles and with Morris's signed inscription to the blank before.A popular French preacher Massillon was praised by the Encyclopaedists for his eloquence and was also respected for his sensitive treatment to moral subjects with these sermons delving into righteousness and judgement. Morris translated French works by Lhomond and was a clergyman at Hockliffe in Bedfordshire. In the publisher's original cloth rebacked with velvet boards and with brassed edges and clip. Externally mostly smart with the odd fading patch to velvet. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine with a minor lift to head. Slight rubbing to brass decoration edges and clip. Marble end papers are bright and clean. Bookseller's stamp to rear pastedown. Internally firmly bound. Pages are mostly bright and clean with spotting to blanks frontispiece and title leaf. This collection of sermons are for the period of lent. The binding is signed by Thouvenin to the spine. Active during the French restoration Thouvenin is credited with raising the standards of French bookbinding after the revolution and is best remembered for his revival of a style of binding that came to be known as the Fanfare style. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. This volume is from St. Peter's and St. Paul's Library in Bath. In a full red calf binding. Externally sound.
