Note di richiamo a stampa a margine del testo. Marca editoriale incisa al frontespizio (mano con compasso e cartiglio con motto "Labore et constantia") il tutto entro cornice tra due figure. Al fondo; Privilegium Caesareum, Summa privilegi Regii, dati tipografici, marca editoriale semplificata xilografata al centro dell'ultima carta bianca. Edizione originale, rara. Lieve, omogenea e tradizionale brunitura dovuta al tipo di carta. Esemplare completo e perfettamente conservato in bella legatura di inizio XX° secolo. - - - Umanista fiammingo (1547-1606) dopo gli studi classici compiuti a Lovanio, fu a Roma per un triennio (1567-1570) grazie alla protezione del Cardinale di Granvelle, cui aveva dedicato un'opera filologica. In seguito, dopo un periodo di viaggi in Germania, Austria e Boemia, ottenne una Cattedra di storia all'Università di Jena, dove fu influenzato dalle idee luterane. Tornato per breve tempo a Lovanio, passò poi all'università calvinista di Leida, dove rimase per dodici anni, fintanto che lo sfavore con cui fu accolta la pubblicazione della sua opera maggiore (Politicorum sive civilis doctrinae libri sex, 1589) nell'ambiente calvinista non lo costrinse a lasciare la cattedra. Tornò infine a Lovanio dove insegnò storia dal 1592. Grande filologo ed editore di classici, studioso di stoicismo antico, Lipsio occupa un posto di rilievo nella storia del pensiero politico controriformistico. Nell'opera "Politicorum ...", nella scia della tradizione storiografica postmachiavellica, egli tentò di conciliare "politica" e "morale" additando la strada nella "prudenza" dei governanti; sul piano religioso, convinto della necessaria unicità della Chiesa di Roma, si pronunciò contro la tolleranza religiosa nei confronti dei dissidenti, ciò che gli valse l'ostilità dei riformati e la riconciliazione con l'ambiente cattolico, insospettito dalle sue precedenti simpatie luterane e calviniste.
