Original Wraps. 8vo. [6], 37, [1] pages. 20 cm. First edition. Full title: The Protestant resolution of faith: being an answer to three questions: I. How far we must depend on the authority of the church for the true sense of Scripture? II. Whether a visible succession from Christ to this day makes a church, which has this succession an infallible interpreter of Scripture, and whether no church, which has not this succession, can teach the true sense of Scripture? III. Whether the Church of England can make out such a visible succession? . The protestant resolution of faith (1683) , maintained that since the age of the apostles the church has had no infallible guide but the scriptures. William Sherlock (c. 1641 June 1707) was a Church of England clergyman and religious controversialist. Sherlock was a leader among the brilliant group of London divines including Thomas Tenison, William Clagett, and Simon Patrick who carried on the literary defense of the Church of England against Catholicism from late in the reign of Charles II into that of James II. Sherlock's 'Protestant Resolution of Faith', first published in 1683, was republished in 1685, 1686, and 1687, at the height of the struggle under James. Subjects: Faith - Early works to 1800. Gilbert Burnet 1643 1715 was a Scottish theologian and historian and Bishop of Salisbury Sarum. He was fluent in Dutch French Latin Greek and Hebrew. Burnet was respected as a cleric a preacher and an academic as well as a writer and historian. He was associated with the Whig party. In the mid-1670s a French translation of Nicholas Sanders' De origine et progressu schismatio Anglicani libri tres 1585 appeared. Sanders attacked the English Reformation as a political act carried on by a corrupt king. Several of Burnet's friends wished him to publish a rebuttal of the work so in 1679 his first volume of The History of the Reformation of the Church of England was published. This covered the reign of Henry VIII; the second volume 1681 covered the reign of Elizabeth and the Elizabethan Religious Settlement; the third volume 1714 consisted of corrections and additional material.1 His literary reputation was greatly enhanced by this publication. The Parliament of England voted thanks for Burnet after the publication of the first volume and in 1680 the University of Oxford awarded Burnet the degree of Doctor of Divinity on the advice of William Sancroft Archbishop of Canterbury. For over a century this was the standard reference work in the field although Catholics disputed some of its content. Thomas Babington Macaulay describes Burnet in relation to the king he served William of Orange: "When the doctor took liberties which was not seldom the case his patron became more than usually cold and sullen and sometimes uttered a short dry sarcasm which would have struck dumb any person of ordinary assurance. In spite of such occurrences however the amity between this singular pair continued with some temporary interruptions till it was dissolved by death. Indeed it was not easy to wound Burnet's feelings. His self-complacency his animal spirits and his want of tact were such that though he frequently gave offence he never took it." - History of England Vol. 2 Ch 7. . In 1692 he was nominated first Boyle lecturer named after scientist Robert Boyle. He then delivered a series of sermons trying to refute Thomas Hobbes and atheism. In particular the lectures tried to show how the recent work in physics by Sir Isaac Newton offered proof of Gods existence. Bentley even corresponded with Newton on the subject. Originally the sermons were printed separately - several editions of each being issued. In 1693 the tracts were first collected together under the present title with separate paginations. The so-called "fourth edition" of 1699 is advertised as "corrected" and it displays continuous pagination. ESTC R21357; Wing B1931.

J.H. for H. Mortlock hardcover

Despite the confusing and obliterated pagination it appears that the text of this book is complete though I have not ascertained whether further illustration plates were called for in this printing beyond the 4/5 including 1 double page which I have noted here. There are other occasional corrections or annotations in very old handwriting and spelling likely by the same person who attempted to renumber the pages. Professionally and sturdily rebound in recent years in a lovely green half leather and matching green cloth binding with gilt bands and black leather title label.
