A rare early work by Rhode Island labor organizer Seth Luther following his first printed work AN ADDRESS TO THE WORKING-MEN OF NEW-ENGLAND. and his AN ADDRESS ON THE RIGHT OF FREE SUFFRAGE published the previous two years. Seth Luther 1795-1863 was born in Providence Rhode Island and worked as a carpenter by trade. Like his earlier publications the present ADDRESS was printed from a speech Luther delivered this time before the Union Association of Working Men in Charlestown Massachusetts in late January 1834. Setting the tone for the speech in the first paragraph Luther rails against those "clothed in purple and fine linen" on the backs "of those who labor day after day." The present work is further described by the DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY as follows: "A denunciation of political and religious as well as economic oppression.the author laid down the following program of reform: universal equal education by means of manual labor schools supported at the public expense; abolition of all licensed monopolies; abolition of capital punishment and of imprisonment for debt.equal taxation for property; and an effective mechanic's lien law. His deadly sincerity forceful language grim humor and biting sarcasm made his pamphlets valuable weapons in the labor movement." <br> <br> This title is rare with this copy being the only one appearing in Rare Book Hub formerly offered by M&S Rare Books. During the Civil War he was assigned a commission as a surgeon in the U.S. Army 11th Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers. He took part in the Battle of Bull Run but became ill and died several months later on February 11 1862. His papers are housed in the University of New Hampshire Library.<br/><br/> unknown books

"black letter" was the first complete Bible printed in "Lancaster Penn" and the=> first folio German Bible printed in America: It was an impressive production large in size set on good paper and the type pleasantly laid out and neatly impressed in double-column format. The frontispiece engraved by J. Henry and showing Moses with the tables of the law is appealing.<br>Â Â Â Â In the preliminaries the double-column text includes a brief biography of Luther and an essay by the famous Pietist August Herman Franke 16631727 advising how to read Scripture. The printer was only 19 years old when he undertook this massive project and despite the numerous subscribers listed on five preliminary pages in four-cloumn format he was nearly bankrupted by the enterprise.<br>Â Â Â Â In the upper outer corner of the front pastedown is the large printed binder's label of "Henrich Miller buchbinder in der Ost Dranien Strasse gegeneuber der Lancaster. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â O'Callaghan 146; Shaw & Shoemaker 47206; Arndt & Eck German Language Printing in the U.S. 2363. Contemporary calf over wood boards evidence of metal and leather clasp closures; leather perished joints outside open front board much loosened but holding tenuously and rear board more securely attached. This model cover design appears in later Putnam titles Morris Tennyson Emerson Rossettis however in those later uses clumsy lettering by another hand was employed as per Gullans. This is the quite rare first edition of 1899 the only copy on the market as of this date. Two marks are rear cover slight wear to corners and margins of spine. Binding: Contemporary sheep in the Cambridge style of three concentric panels on the covers the inner- and outermost sprinkled and the middle one left natural. Round spine with raised bands.
