18550001548SAGAMORE PLYMOUTH MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Good. 1855. On offer is an interesting original pre Civil War and Civil War era manuscript diary journal and catchall scrapbook handwritten and compiled by we believe Luther Douglas b.1828 and then later his son Charles Everett Douglas b.1852 between 1855 and November 1862. Casual research finds Luther born in Plymouth and Charles in Sagamore Massachusetts. This is backed up with many entries suggesting easy visits and trips to Plymouth. The book is marked "Hired Mens Book" but that is crossed out and then is full of Douglas' writings and clippings save for a couple of pages used by a child Charles it appears. This unusual book has approximately 122 pages with entries a short scrap area: 10 pages have poetry cut from newspapers and/or magazines covering up the journal entries dated from January 1855 or so. This is followed by three pages of entries and then scraps on 19 Presidents not in chronological order are pasted down covering other entries. These were placed later as evidenced by the Abraham Lincoln clipping mentioning the President's martyrdom. The balance is a personal journal and diary centering around work related entries mostly for Sarah or Jacob Perry then Handel Tripp and many many more visits purchases trips and much more. There are a small number of ephemeral inserts one of particular genealogical interest as it is a slip of paper with the note: 'one man's family'. The book itself is a board covered book measuring approximately 6 1/4" x 7 3/4". Barrett a Baptist Minister from Weston MA concerning his trip to Europe in 1866 and a number of small ephemera pieces including a September 10 1866 letter from Bishop written in Cologne Germany 8 pp plus a few paper snippets containing autographs/signatures of a few individuals.within the diary is a full signed page by a noted author of the "History of the Reformation" Merle d' Aubigne. Attached to this page is an old newspaper clipping describing Barrett's meeting with this great man.The diary notes that Barrett set sail from Boston on the Bark "Young Turk".captained by a Captain Small.references to Provincetown.his travel companion one I.W. Bishop.schools of fish.observations of the sailors' life and work.whales porpoises huge jellyfish.stops in Gibralter Majorca Monaco Italy Vatican City Pompeii Switzerland Germany all described from an intimate first-hand perspective.a number of small drawings by Barrett illustrate the diary.plain board cover with a leather binding strip.Barrett was apparently very well read as he offers some historical background of the places he visits mixed in with his own observations. a fascinating mid-19th century ephemera lot. "A work dealing with the chemistry of soils and manures and one of the first such scientific treatises written by an American and published in the United States. It attracted immediate attention and went through several editions. He later wrote an Essay on Manures 1850 which was widely used as a rural handbook and for which the author was awarded a prize by the Massachusetts Society for Promoting Agriculture" DAB. A very clean and attractive copy.Luther Halsey Gulick b. 1828 grew up on the Hawaiian island of Kaua'i but later graduated medical school in 1850 from New York University. He was ordained a minister in 1851 and soon set off for missionary work in Micronesia where he stayed until 1859. He returned to Hawaii in 1864 he served as head of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association. His wife Louisa founded a female school in her home called the Kawaiaha o Seminary for Girls which later became part of the Mid-Pacific Institute. Soon the establishment was viewing Gulick as a bit too liberal as among other things he advocated the retirement of older white missionaries to be replaced by native Hawaiians. He also protested the labor system of sugarcane plantations in Hawaii viewing them as no different than the slavery that existed in the States. Gulick became editor of the Hawaiian language newspaper Ka Hoku Loa and then Ka Nupepa K oko a "the independent newspaper" which gave him a platform for attacking what he considered detrimental to the Hawaiian people; Catholic leanings and a government program to make the English language exclusive in the schools among others. He was relieved of his office in 1869 and spent the remaining years of his life as a itinerant missionary in Asia. M. W. Dodd unknown
